Giants Fielding Calls for No. 3 Pick
Chris Pedota, NorthJersey.com / USA TODAY NETWORK

There is no topic more worn out in NFL Draft discussions than fans wanting to trade down. Maybe it’s from fatigue of talking about the same handful of prospects or a wandering eye towards next year’s quarterback class. Perhaps one wants to feel smart for suggesting a move that nearly guarantees surplus value.

Nevertheless, it remains a popular talking point, and as the 2025 NFL Draft nears, almost every team has been whisked into the conversation.

Despite being locked into either a blue-chip prospect or the top passer remaining, the New York Giants are the newest team involved in these talks.

ESPN’s Peter Schrager reported that the Giants are among the teams fielding calls for their top pick.

“Although the Tennessee Titans are not entertaining offers for the first overall pick as of Tuesday morning, sources told Schrager that the Browns, who have the second pick, and the Giants, who pick third, have received trade calls over the past 48 hours -- and that neither team is outwardly rejecting those overtures,” Adam Schefter wrote.

“The expectation, sources told Schrager, is that those teams looking to trade up to the No. 2 or No. 3 pick are pursuing Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter, Penn State pass rusher Abdul Carter or Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty.”

Everybody has a price, so general manager Joe Schoen can very well accept some Godfather offer. But if no team is losing their mind out of desperation, it’s hard to imagine New York trading down.

That’s largely due to the high-level talents available to them at No. 3. Obviously, the top picks in the class are going to be more valuable because of the blue-chip prospects on the board. But the 2025 class is unique in that two non-quarterbacks are far and away the best in the class. The gap between Hunter/Carter and, say, the ninth pick is bigger than most years, and the difference between a fringe-top-10 selection and the back of Round 1 isn’t seismic.

For as plus-value as a proposition trading down can be, that’s not necessarily the case for the Giants.

It’s more likely that New York is in pursuit of a quarterback and attempting to have its cake and eat it too. Taking Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders at No. 3 will be seen as a reach. Doing so later in Round 1, and amassing more draft capital, is an easier sell.

It’s not necessarily the right one. The Giants are in need of elite talents, and one will be on the board at No. 3. Passing on that opportunity is treacherous, especially in this quarterback class.
