One of the most feared linebackers in NFL history is reportedly a candidate to become a college football coach.
Baltimore Ravens legend Ray Lewis is reportedly a candidate for a job that became open earlier this week. The Hall of Famer doesn't have a coaching background, but that apparently doesn't matter to the Florida-based school.
So where could he be coaching in the near future?
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Lewis is a candidate to replace former Texas head coach Tom Herman, who was fired by Florida Atlantic earlier in the week.
"Following the Deion Sanders-to-Colorado model, Hall-of-Fame linebacker Ray Lewis has emerged as a candidate to become the next head coach at Florida Atlantic University, sources tell ESPN," Schefter reported on Wednesday morning.
The candidacy of Lewis comes after the program terminated Tom Herman's contract on Monday amid a six-game losing streak. He lasted less than two seasons, with a 6-16 record and 0-6 conference record in 2024.
"I extend my appreciation to Tom Herman for his dedication to our university and our student-athletes," athletic director Brian White said in a statement. "I informed Tom of my decision this morning and then met with the staff and team. We firmly believe in our ability to win championships and compete for bowl games, and that remains our standard."
FAU found success under head coach Lane Kiffin before he left to become the head coach at Ole Miss. Since his departure, the team is in the midst of four straight losing seasons.
Apparently the school believes that hiring a former NFL star linebacker could help - even if he doesn't have coaching experience.
