Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes hasn't been playing to the level we've become accustomed to this season, and despite that, his team is undefeated, sitting at 9-0.
But that hasn't stopped some from questioning the three-time Super Bowl champ. While injuries to his receiver room are a clear reason for his up-and-down stats, we still expected Patrick to make it work because he's done so before.
However, through nine games, Mahomes has thrown just 12 touchdowns to nine interceptions and is averaging his lowest yards per game total for his career (245.3) and his lowest passer rating (90.3) since his rookie season.
For Mahomes, going through the struggles last season that saw him have a career-high interception total (14) and lose the most games in the regular season ever (six) has helped him focus on the only stat that matters in football.
“I learned a lot about myself last year when I wasn't playing my best football and we were struggling throughout the season,” Mahomes said. “I learned how to find ways to win, and it helped me grow up not only as a player but as a person to show that it's not about stats, it's not about how you get it done, it's just about getting it done.
"I know how tough it was last year when we were losing those football games, and if we're finding ways to win this year, and I'm not putting up the stats, I feel a lot happier when I go home.”
The theme for the 2024 Chiefs has been when they need to make a play, whether that be on offense, defense, or special teams, they make the play and win the game.
Still not having played a full four quarters of high-level football this season, there's ample room for growth, particularly from Mahomes.
With Isiah Pacheco and Juju Smith-Schuster edging closer to a return from their respective injuries, Mahomes will get back to key weapons to add to DeAndre Hopkins, Travis Kelce, Kareem Hunt, and Xavier Worthy, so we could see an uptick in performance from the two-time MVP winner.
But regardless of what Mahomes' stats look like, he only cares about winning, and that's something he's done better than anyone since becoming a full-time starter.
