The Washington Commanders' new regime, led by Jayden Daniels and head coach Dan Quinn, has gotten off to the best possible start.
With Daniels leading the team to 12 regular-season wins and an NFC Championship appearance, the Commanders were one of the best teams in football last season.
But for all of Jayden's great play and late-game heroics, one thing stood out in a negative light—he was sacked a lot.
A total of 47 sacks (sixth most in football) for the slender Daniels is a disaster waiting to happen, and it is clear that this needs to be improved.
For Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane - who deals with Josh Allen's talent at QB - Washington must do its best to make sure Jayden isn't put in harm's way that often again.
"Ultimately make sure he is protected," Beane said via ESPN's John Keim. "How does he play as many games as possible? [Daniels is] an elusive runner as well, so having those conversations with him as well of being smart. We had to have a lot of those with Josh and sometimes still do. He can be a knucklehead sometimes.
"It's just showing him on film, 'Hey, you had an opportunity to get out of bounds. You had an opportunity to get down.' Having those discussions about when do you need to put your body on the line, and when do you not? You can't put him in bubble wrap, but [it's about] protecting him with the line and then him protecting himself."
Quinn and Daniels have already had discussions last season regarding Jayden getting out of bounds and avoiding hits. Still, when you are so used to getting out of trouble with your athletic traits in college, it is understandable to think you can do it in the NFL.
Except players are a lot faster.
So while Jayden's rookie season was one for the history books, there is still plenty to work on, and making sure he is healthy enough to play 17 regular games is essential.
Because, after all, the best ability is availability.
