Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones met with reporters Tuesday, two days before the 2025 NFL Draft.
Jones addressed a number of topics, including of course, the quarterback position. Dallas still has Dak Prescott as its starter, but the depth chart behind him looks a little different after Cooper Rush and Trey Lance left this offseason. Joe Milton, acquired via trade with the New England Patriots, is the current backup, with veteran Will Grier also on the roster.
Of course, the Cowboys have been mentioned as a potential sleeper team to draft Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders, given his father's connection to the franchise, but by the sound of Jones' comments today, that won't be happening.
“We are not in the business around here, at this time, looking for our future quarterback," Jones said, via NFL Network's Jane Slater.
Slater added that Jones conceded you do have to keep an eye somewhat on the future, but when pressed, did not sound like someone who planned to draft a QB in the first round Thursday night.
"[Jones] acknowledges Dak getting hurt last year but after I asked him and someone else I feel pretty certain no QB in the first round," Slater wrote. "In other words, they have prepped and prepared for scenario but they have a lot of others they feel better about at 12 in various scenarios."
Dallas made Prescott the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL before the 2024 season, but the three-time Pro Bowler was limited to only eight starts due to injuries.
Prescott is signed through the 2028 season, when he'll be 35 years old. Right now, it seems like replacing the veteran QB would be too costly, given the immense salary cap implications.
We'll see who Dallas does actually target at No. 12 overall in the first round of the NFL Draft Thursday night.
