As was the case on Wednesday, first-year New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn spoke with media members on Friday and not-so-politely declined to reveal if Justin Fields or Tyrod Taylor will serve as the starting quarterback when the 0-7 Jets play at the Cincinnati Bengals (3-4) this Sunday.
Glenn then discussed his odd handling of a situation that continues to leave outsiders scratching their heads.
Per Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic, Glenn said that it's "tough" for a team to prepare for a game without knowing the exact identity of the opposing QB1. Last fall, Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur left the Detroit Lions guessing regarding Green Bay's depth chart when starter Jordan Love was dealing with a groin injury. Glenn was Detroit's defensive coordinator at the time.
"I went through that in Detroit when it was Malik Willis and Jordan Love," Glenn explained. "LaFleur did a great job of not saying who that quarterback was. We had to prepare for both of those guys. So I don't see why we think this is something that hasn't been done."
Most members of the NFL community expect Taylor will get the nod after Jets owner Woody Johnson verbally tossed Fields under a figurative bus earlier this week when Johnson basically blamed the signal-caller for the team's woeful record. Glenn benched Fields for Taylor during the Jets' 13-6 loss to the Carolina Panthers on Oct. 19.
It sounds like Jets players know who will start at Cincinnati's Paycor Stadium this weekend. For what it's worth, history suggests somebody will leak the information before Sunday afternoon arrives.
"We had a great week of practice with our guys," Glenn added during his back-and-forth with reporters. "Our guys know, and we're going to keep that between us, and that's how it's going to be."
Fair or not, the perception exists that Glenn is already desperate to find any fix possible for an offense that failed to score a touchdown over the past two games. Shortly after Glenn's media availability wrapped up, ESPN BET had the Jets as 6.5-point underdogs against the Bengals.
