Jets Hire New General Manager

The New York Jets fired general manager Joe Douglas in November and, in the meantime, appointed Phil Savage as interim general manager.

However, the Jets will be under new leadership after NFL insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported that New York is hiring Darren Mougey as its new general manager.

The 39-year-old had been the assistant general manager of the Denver Broncos for the past three years. He began working with Denver in 2012 as a scouting intern and has worked through the scouting department since then. He was promoted to assistant director of college scouting in 2020 and moved to director of player personnel in 2021.

Mougey played college football at San Diego State from 2005 to 2008 before briefly playing in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons and Arizona Cardinals in 2009 and 2010, although he never made it to either team's active roster.

The Jets still have several question marks. The franchise hired Aaron Glenn, who left the Detroit Lions, as its head coach. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has one year remaining on the three-year deal he signed with the Jets in 2023.

He would carry a $14 million dead cap hit if he were designated a post-6/1 release with an additional $35 million dead cap hit in 2026.

The Jets also have wide receiver Davante Adams under contract for two more seasons. He will occupy over $38 million in cap space next year.

Mougey and Glenn must decide the short-term path for the franchise's future as it turns the page from the Robert Saleh and Douglas era.
