Lions Offensive Coordinator Ben Johnson Has Already Found His Next Job
Junfu Han-USA Today Network

From the moment the NFL's 2024 regular season came to an end, it was abundantly clear that the Detroit Lions were going have a couple of coordinators to replace once their season was over.

Defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn and offensive coordinator Ben Johnson immediately found themselves receiving interview requests for head coaching position.

Now, just two days after the Lions were eliminated from the playoffs, one of those coordinators is already finalizing a contract for their next job and Lions fans won't be too pleased to see what that job is.

According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, Johnson is finalizing a deal that would make him the head coach of the Chicago Bears.

Johnson had also been linked to the Raiders, but ended up choosing the Lions' NFC North rival instead.

The move makes a lot of sense for Johnson. As the hottest commodity on the coaching market, he was going to have his pick of job opportunities and he chose arguably the best situation available to him.

The Bears selected Caleb Williams first overall in last year's NFL Draft to be their franchise QB.

Then they grabbed him one of the best receivers in the draft when they landed Rome Odunze. Alongside Odunze, they also have stud receiver D.J. Moore.

With D'Andre Swift at running back, Johnson will believe that he has plenty of pieces to build another strong offense after leading the Lions to the league's best scoring average in 2024.

The Bears were also right around the middle of the league in points allowed this past season, so neither side of the ball looks like a huge drawback for this job.

They are projected to have the fourth-most salary cap space in the league during the 2025 offseason and own the 10th pick in the draft, which should give them plenty of opportunity to solidify the weak points on the team and turn them into a roster that can compete quickly.

For the Lions, this is not nearly so positive of a development.

The Lions will hate to see Johnson twice a year as this signing likely just made an unbelievably strong NFC North even more difficult to navigate.

Now, they'll turn their attention to figuring how they are going to replace an offensive coordinator who had an extremely impressive three seasons in the role, helping the Lions transform into a contender.
