It felt more like a celebration than a spring game.
Michael Vick’s first appearance as Norfolk State head coach turned Dick Price Stadium into the epicenter of 757 sports culture Saturday, drawing out hometown legends, HBCU faithful, and a community that’s ready to rally behind the Spartans and Vick.
From the moment Vick stepped on the field — two full hours before kickoff — the buzz was undeniable. But it wasn’t just about football. It was about family, culture, and legacy. Allen Iverson, a football standout before basketball superstardom, surprised the crowd by joining the Spartans’ post-game breakdown.
“It’s a beautiful feeling just to be out here,” Iverson said. “I want to be a part of this. I want to have a lot to do with this.”

Tyrod Taylor, another 757 product turned NFL vet, echoed that sentiment. “I watched Mike growing up. Modeled my game after him. Now seeing him give back in this way — it’s powerful,” Taylor said. “This is bigger than football.”

Fans paid $10 to attend the spring game — a rare move for a preseason scrimmage. But they weren’t just buying tickets; they were buying into a movement. Merchandise trailers lined the stadium with Vick-branded Norfolk State gear, and former Spartans like Juwan “Pootie” Carter marveled at the change in energy.
“When I was here, the spring game wasn’t like this,” Carter said. “Now? It’s electric. This feels like a real program shift.”
Vick’s impact is already visible beyond the field. He’s creating access and bringing in role models. Norfolk State QB Israel Carter felt it immediately.
“Being part of the Coach Vick experience — it means everything,” Carter said. “He’s giving us more than football. He’s giving us voices like Iverson, like Tyrod, and lessons that last.”
If the spring game was the preview, HBCU football fans might want to buckle up for the full Michael Vick experience this fall. The 757 showed up — and now, the rest of the country is watching.
