The Kansas City Chiefs must strengthen their offensive line this season. Their 15-2 regular-season campaign made many overlook the fact that Patrick Mahomes was sacked a career-high number of times last season. The offensive line's deficiencies were on full display in the Super Bowl.
The Chiefs followed up their loss to the Philadelphia Eagles by trading offensive lineman Joe Thuney, who was entering the last season of his contract.
While the Chiefs' reasons for trading Thuney were likely more contractual than performance-based, he is a significant loss. Trading away one of their best offensive linemen, while also needing to improve their offensive line, has made for an intriguing draft for the Chiefs.
NFL expert Brian Baldinger recently analyzed a few of the Chiefs' offseason moves. He was surprised by the Chiefs' decision to sign Jaylon Moore. Baldinger believes the Chiefs' offensive line has plenty of question marks. Kansas City must add to the unit in the upcoming draft.
"I mean, I was a little shocked that they threw money at Jaylon Moore; he's been a backup to Trent Williams. He did start five games last year. He's got 12 starts over his four years in this league," Baldinger said.
"They must have seen enough of them. I didn't think he was very good on the edge against elite guys. But it's not just left tackle. I mean, they got Kingsley Suamataia playing left guard now, too, to replace two, and that's the first-team All-Pro guard, so I've never seen him play guard. Not to say he can't; he's a world of talent."
Baldinger questioned whether the Chiefs gave up on Suamataia too quickly, before forcing him to switch positions.
"I thought they gave up on him pretty early after two starts in Kansas City a year ago. Now they're kicking him inside, so it's a brand new left side. So not only are they trying to solve two positions, but two guys have to get to know each other. To your point, this off-season is very important for their communication and building the trust I thought they had at one point," Baldinger said.
