Just last week Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes debuted a new look at stunned the football world.

He cut off his patent mohawk for a cropped style featuring a fade on the side. Photos of the new haircut immediately went viral on social media with fans stunned by the departure from his signature look.

A week later, his barber, DeJuan Bonds, opened up on the new look for Mahomes and why the three-time Super Bowl champion decided to change things up following a heartbreaking Super Bowl LIX loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

"He had mentioned during that time that entering fatherhood, he needed to go ahead and change up his hairstyle and didn't want to be wearing a Mohawk, but we toyed with cutting it off a couple of times, but we were both superstitious and decided that now wasn't the time," Bonds told Fox News.

For Bonds, "cut it off" doesn't exactly mean, "cut it off."

"A lot of times, when someone says, ‘Cut it off,’ they don't really know. They're just saying something. Me, as an experienced barber, I know that ‘cut it off’ really don't mean ‘cut it off,'" Bonds said.

The barber revealed he advised Mahomes away from the "cut it off" suggestion.

"I would advise him not to do that unless he wanted to turn back to a 17-year-old Mahomes," he said."Even with the haircut that he got right now, it made him look a lot younger, but if I did something like that to him, he would even look younger, and I don't think he wants to look younger like that."

Instead, Bonds went with the haircut he had in mind for the Chiefs star quarterback. "He basically smiled and said, ‘Yeah, I like that,'" Bonds said of Mahomes' reaction to the new hairstyle.
