Patrick Mahomes Named NFL's 5th Best Quarterback Entering 2025

Entering the Super Bowl, there were many who thought Patrick Mahomes could surpass Tom Brady as the GOAT of quarterbacks with a victory.

Instead, Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs were beaten 40-22 by the Philadelphia Eagles. The defeat crushed the Chiefs' hopes of a historic three-peat and left a sour taste in their mouths heading into what will be a pivotal offseason for the team's now-stalled dynasty.

Speaking of offseason stuff, former NFL quarterback Kurt Benkert put out a too early ranking of the top 20 QBs in the league heading into 2025. Shockingly, he has Mahomes fifth

Lamar Jackson is No. 1 on Benkert's list, followed by 2024 MVP Josh Allen. Joe Burrow is third, and Jayden Daniels, who took the league by storm as a rookie comes in fourth, one spot ahead of Mahomes.

"This is a blend of them as a player, the situation their in, and context to the players around them," Benkert explained. "It’s not an exact science, but how I see them on a weighted scale. Some guys, if they swapped teams, could just each other — but this isn’t Madden franchise."

At first glance, seeing Mahomes at five seems insane. But consider the fact Benkert claims the two-time NFL MVP with three Super Bowl rings was "barely top 10 all season for me."

Most of the rest of Benkert's rankings aren't that odd, though we are questioning leaving Drake Maye off. Anyway, putting Mahomes that low is crazy, and that's really our overriding point.

Odds are, Mahomes won't ever see these rankings, and if he does, will totally ignore them.

It doesn't seem like he needs any additional motivation after turning in one of the most disappointing performances of his career on the sport's biggest stage.

"Appreciate all the love and support from #ChiefsKingdom I let y’all down today. I’ll always continue to work and try and learn and be better for it. Want to give thanks to God for every opportunity he has given me. We will be back," Mahomes told his X/Twitter followers after Sunday's loss.
