Offensive tackle may not be the NFL’s most exciting position, but Patriots quarterback Drake Maye should be thrilled with New England’s first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Widely considered the best offensive lineman in the draft, fourth overall pick Will Campbell allowed only four sacks in 1,594 pass-blocking snaps over the past three seasons with LSU and finished 2024 as a first-team All-American. He also shared the SEC Jacobs Blocking Trophy with Texas left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr.
While much has been made about his arm length (32 ⅝ inches), Campbell earned the second-highest score among offensive linemen at the NFL Scouting combine with athleticism that belies his 6-foot-6, 323-pound frame.

According to his relative athletic score (RAS), Campbell’s speed and explosiveness are considered elite as the former Tiger left the combine with the 15th-highest athletic score of 1,508 offensive tackle prospects since 1987.
As a rookie, Maye took 2.6 sacks per game while helping the team score a league-low 17 points per contest in 2024. Adding a blue-chip left tackle like Campbell should help, even if he has to play guard.
Pro Football Focus calls Campbell “an offensive lineman’s offensive lineman” and names him as the top offensive tackle in this year’s draft. All but two of his 2,548 snaps with LSU came at left tackle, but The 33rd Team’s Josh Foster, like many analysts, would like to see him move inside.
“I think Campbell has Pro Bowl potential as a guard, but would most likely be an average to below average tackle. While guards still have to be able to mirror a two-way go, they’re responsible for significantly less space and the length and foot speed requirements are much less demanding.”
New England gave veteran Morgan Moses a three-year, $24M deal to play right tackle next season, but Vederian Lowe, a former sixth-round pick of the Vikings, is currently slated to play left tackle. Rest assured, the Patriots will give Campbell every opportunity to protect the quarterback’s blind side and will move him grudgingly if he falls short.
New England has seven picks remaining in the draft, including the 38th pick overall and a pair of third- and fifth-round selections. Rounds 2 and 3 will be held on Friday, April 25, at 7 p.m. EST, with the remaining rounds scheduled for Saturday, April 26, at noon EST.
