QB Josh McCown signing with Houston Texans

As Grant Gordon wrote for NFL.com, 41-year-old quarterback Josh McCown is putting pen to paper on an agreement with the Houston Texans to join their active roster. It's McCown's 12th franchise since he entered the NFL via the 2002 draft.

McCown had been on the practice squad of the Philadelphia Eagles this season after he made three appearances for them in 2019. A native of Jacksonville, Texas, McCown wanted to be closer to his family while remaining in the league.

NFL Network's Mike Garafolo pointed out that McCown was viewed as a great mentor for younger members of the Eagles, particularly starting QB Carson Wentz and rookie signal-caller Jalen Hurts. It's a role McCown has embraced throughout his career.

McCown tutored Johnny Manziel when the two were with the Cleveland Browns in 2015 and, per a Cleveland.com story, the veteran reached out to the former first-round pick after the Browns parted ways with the college phenom once known as "Johnny Football." McCown then spent time with the New York Jets and, eventually, took a back seat to Sam Darnold.

"My parents know how much he's helped me throughout the whole process," Darnold said of McCown in September of his rookie year, per Rich Cimini of ESPN. "He's been nothing but the best."

McCown will likely sit behind starter Deshaun Watson and backup AJ McCarron on the Houston depth chart.
