Raiders building strong connection with highly-touted prospect

Over the last month or so, the attention of the Las Vegas Raiders as to who they will draft sixth overall has shifted considerably.

For the longest time, it felt destined that Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders would end up as a Raider. He presented a long-term option at quarterback that Las Vegas sorely lacked, as well as the off-field swagger to entice a new generation of Raiders fans. However, that dream came to a grinding halt when the Raiders traded for Geno Smith, meaning quarterback was no longer such an immediate need that Sanders was necessary.

The spotlight has now fallen squarely on Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty, and the university’s Pro Day on Wednesday only turned it up brighter.

The Raiders were heavily represented during Boise State’s pro day.

The most notable members of the Raiders contingent present in Boise included general manager John Spytek and running backs coach Deland McCullough, both of whom were confirmed by Boise State beat reporter B.J. Rains.

Needless to say, the Raiders were not exactly being subtle about who they were most interested in seeing.

Now, it is important to know that just because the Raiders brought their heavy hitters out to visit Jeanty does not mean selecting him is a foregone conclusion. Every NFL team has prospects they genuinely like and will perform such large-scale evaluations on some of them to make sure they fit how the team operates. That said, having the top decision-maker and position coach out to visit is a sign that the Boise State superstar is on their radar.

The hype train of Jeanty to the Raiders just picked up some serious speed.
