For the second time in three games, a Derrick Henry fumble played a big part in the Baltimore Ravens suffering a disappointing defeat.
Following Baltimore's 38-30 home loss to the Detroit Lions on Monday night, Henry spoke openly about the fact that he has now put the ball on the ground three times across three contests.
"I'm at a loss for words," Henry said following the game, per Kevin Patra of the NFL's website. "I apologize to 'Flock Nation.' It's not a good feeling. I'm going to keep working to get it fixed."
With roughly 8:30 remaining in regulation and the Ravens trailing by four points, Henry had the ball punched out of his arm deep in Baltimore territory. The Lions kicked a field goal on the subsequent possession and then iced the game away via a 31-yard touchdown run with 1:42 left to play.
Back in Week 1, a fourth-quarter Henry fumble gifted the Buffalo Bills with an opportunity to complete what became an epic comeback win. Following that game, Henry accepted blame for his team's loss.
"It's just crazy. Three fumbles [in three games] straight," Henry added during his comments on Monday night. "I'm trying every day to fix the problem that just keeps occurring, so I'm trying to work on it. I'm my worst critic, so I'm not going to try to beat myself up too much, but it's hard not to when it's consecutive and consistent [instances] of me doing the same thing."
Henry entered September as an advertised Offensive Player of the Year Award candidate and finished Week 3 ranked fourth in the NFL with 242 rushing yards on the season, per ESPN stats. Nevertheless, the Baltimore offense could have a serious problem if the 31-year-old begins doubting himself in the fourth quarters of games.
"It hasn't been (a problem), and I don't think it'll be going forward, but we have to get it fixed," Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said about Henry's latest turnover. "That was kind of a blind shot there. I thought he had the ball in good position. I thought the defender got a good look at it, though."
Henry will have an opportunity to bounce back when 1-2 Baltimore plays at the 1-2 Kansas City Chiefs this coming Sunday. As of Tuesday morning, ESPN BET had the Ravens as 2.5-point favorites for that matchup.
"Adversity is rough right now," Henry admitted on Monday night, according to Jamison Hensley of ESPN. "But as long as we stay focused -- and everybody else will stay focused -- we'll try to turn this thing around. I know we will."
