Russell Wilson was a free agent, so he technically could have signed anywhere.
The truth is, there was, perhaps, not the biggest market for a 5-foot-11, 36-year-old quarterback whose best days seem to be behind him — so he may not have been able to sign anywhere — but he's still a starting caliber quarterback in the NFL.
He started 11 games last season for the Pittsburgh Steelers and won six of those contests. That's not MVP-level quarterbacking — the trait he once possessed — but with the right players around him Wilson can still get it done.
As far as he's concerned, that's why he's in New York now, despite the Giants also signing Jameis Winston and re-signing Tommy DeVito this offseason.
"Yeah, I expect to be the starter and come in here and be ready to rock and roll every day," Wilson said during an introductory news conference on Zoom, according to Jordan Raanan of ESPN "I think this team's really looking for somebody to lead them in every way."
Wilson can be a leader. There's no doubt about it. Interestingly enough, he may have a chance to be a mentor as well. The Giants have the No. 3 pick in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft and there's nothing that suggests New York wouldn't pick a quarterback there.
Wilson says he'll do his part as a veteran quarterback, but he came to New York to be dangerous and win ball games.
"If we draft a quarterback, we will make sure that he does everything he can to be ready to go and be prepared with his mentality," Wilson said. "But for me, it's about the process of winning. I'm focused on winning, what I can do as a quarterback of the New York Giants to help us win and to do everything that we can to lead."
