Two days out from the NFL Draft the drama is picking up league-wide. Weeks ago, many had the impression that most teams were complacent with keeping their draft positioning.
That has changed the last few days. As some teams' plans have become more clear, others are beginning to joust for positioning in the draft order, hoping to land their favored targets.
When there are teams looking to get aggressive, that makes a need for partners to help them achieve their end goal. ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter believes the Pittsburgh Steelers could be among the group looking to move back.
"On the other side of things, the Steelers (No. 21) are among the teams interested in moving back from their first-round slot. That list also includes the Jaguars (5), Panthers (8), 49ers (11), Falcons (15), Seahawks (18), Buccaneers (19) and Vikings (24), who currently have four picks the fewest any team."
That would seem to line up as the Steelers make for a strong candidate on paper to move back. Pittsburgh's biggest need remains at the quarterback position, a spot which they may not find a long-term solution for in the coming months.
The Tennessee Titans are an essential lock to take Cam Ward at No. 1, leaving Shedeur Sanders and Jaxson Dart as the next best options. Sanders may have a higher grade though his stock looks to be extremely volatile.
From the Steelers perspective, banking on addressing that need at No. 21 would be ill-advised. Given the lessened urgency to plug other holes on the roster, moving back to add draft capital is a strong proposition.
At No. 21, the Steelers are nudged into a sweet spot where there could be a variety of suitors looking to move up. Teams selecting early in Round 1 may double-dip, dishing out an early second rounder for another Day 1 selection.
Alternatively, teams slated just a few spots behind Pittsburgh may bid against one another to beat out any competition for a particular prospect.
Should trade conversations continue to heat up, the Steelers only stand to benefit from facilitating a draft day trade.
