Today, Broncos head coach Sean Payton provided an update to the media on recently arrested outside linebackers coach Michael Wilhoite. Payton says, “We’re on top of it relative to local authorities as well as the league office.” Payton made it clear that Denver will continue monitoring the legal situation closely.
Denver Broncos outside linebackers coach Michael Wilhoite was arrested on Sunday night for second-degree assault on a peace officer at the Denver International Airport.
Wilhoite was placed in custody at the Downtown Detention Center after punching an officer during an apparent disagreement. According to USA Today, Wilhoite reportedly struck the officer with a punch, knocking the officer to the ground before returning to his Ford Bronco where Wilhoite was then tased by law enforcement. Wilhoite drove off after being tased and was later arrested.
According to official court documents provided by the Denver Police Department, Wilhoite was scheduled for a court appearance at 10:30 a.m. on Monday.
The Broncos made a public statement following the incident, “We are aware of a situation involving Michael Wilhoite that occurred Sunday and are in the process of gathering more information.”
Wilhoite has been the outside linebackers coach for Denver since 2023. Before Denver, Wilhoite coached for the Los Angeles Chargers as linebackers coach and the New Orleans Saints as special teams assistant in 2019.
Wilhoite is a former NFL player, as he spent time with the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers. Before playing in the NFL, Wilhoite attended Washburn University and played in the United Football League in 2011.
Court documents show Wilhoite is scheduled to appear in court again on March 10.
