The Seattle Seahawks are making a bunch of changes to their quarterbacks room for the 2025 season. After trading Geno Smith and signing Sam Darnold, they've now added a new backup to sit behind their new starter.
According to Fox NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Seahawks are signing veteran Drew Lock as their backup for the 2025 season. Lock has some familiarity with the team, if not the coaching staff, having been their backup for Geno Smith between 2022 and 2023.
"Sources: The #Seahawks are signing veteran QB Drew Lock, bringing him back to Seattle for a second stint. He will backup Sam Darnold," Schultz wrote on X.

Lock was a second-round pick by the Denver Broncos in the 2019 NFL Draft and played for Denver for about three years before being traded to Seattle in the infamous Russell Wilson trade.
He did not play in 2022 and went 1-1 in 2023 before being let go. Lock signed with the New York Giants for the 2024 season but couldn't do much for the ill-fated team, going just 1-4 in eight games.
In five years of football, Lock is 10-18 as a starter with a 59.6-percent completion rate, 34 touchdowns and 28 interceptions. On the ground, he has 95 carries for 432 yards and seven touchdowns.
Suffice it to say, he's pretty much the definition of a "serviceable backup quarterback."
With the arrival of Lock, the Seahawks now have four quarterbacks under contract: Darnold, Lock, Sam Howell and Jaren Hall.
That's a few too many people in the quarterbacks room and the team may very well add one in the NFL draft or undrafted free agency. We can probably expect to see Lock, Howell and Hall all competing for the primary backup job with the losers either getting spots on the practice squad or outright cut.
2025 will be a big year for the Seattle Seahawks. Their division is going to be pretty stacked this season. The 49ers and going to be healthier, the Los Angeles Rams are getting younger and the Arizona Cardinals can really only get better after the last few disappointing seasons.
Will the Seahawks get the right kind of quarterback play to win their division?
