Steelers Finally Sign Their (Backup) Quarterback

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a new receiving weapon in DK Metcalf, and an old quarterback to throw to him.

In a week in which Steelers fans are holding their collective breath at any iota of Aaron Rodgers news, the team on Thursday announced the signing of a quarterback. A familiar one, in fact.

Mason Rudolph is back with the Steelers, agreeing to a two-year, $8 million contract. He spent 2018-23 in Pittsburgh before last season playing for the Tennessee Titans. He started five games for the Titans, and made 14 starts during his first stint with the Steelers including a playoff loss to the Buffalo Bills after the 2023 season.

While Mason is back as obviously the No. 2 backup, the Steelers continue to scramble for their No. 1.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Steelers have made a formal offer to Rodgers and they're waiting for his response. The four-time MVP and most recently New York Jet is characteristically chilling somewhere on a beach.

Russell Wilson, still in play in Pittsburgh if Rodgers flakes, is scheduled to meet Thursday with the Cleveland Browns and on Friday with the New York Giants. Russ obviously has taken the hint that he's not the Steelers' first option.

Neither is Rudolph, but at least we know he'll be in a Steelers uniform in 2025.

A wild card in this game of quarterback musical chairs is Kirk Cousins, who is still on the Atlanta Falcons' roster behind Michael Penix but could become available via trade for a desperate team runs out of time and options.
