This goes for fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the rest of the AFC North and the rest of the NFL, too: There are few other ways to describe Baltimore Ravens tight end Mark Andrews’ Divisional Round performance than an utter disaster.
A fourth-quarter fumble and a drop on a crucial two-point conversion didn’t just end the Ravens’ season. It left a permanent stain on a resume and legacy that he’d spent the better part of a decade fostering in Baltimore.
Andrews, once a staple among the league’s elite tight ends, has been dealt a harsh hand of adversity. From the ankle injury that ended his 2023 to a preseason car crash that may explain his slow start in 2024, his mid-season success can be forgotten, crushed by the weight of a season that started and ended poorly.
And now?
Andrews’ immediate future in Baltimore is in question, and trade rumors are swirling around the Ravens.
Eyebrows were raised a few weeks when general manager Eric DeCosta didn’t guarantee Andrews’ spot on the 2025 roster during his media availability at Lucas Oil Stadium.
"Mark is going to go down as one of our great players -- he'll be in the [Ravens] Ring of Honor someday," Eric DeCosta said. "I love having Mark on the team -- he's an amazing player. I know he's going to have an amazing season. We'll figure out all of the roster machinations over the coming weeks, but I can tell you, there's no bigger fan of Mark Andrews than me."
And now an update on Tuesday from Baltimore, with the GM dropping a bombshell of sorts.
"I never know what's going to happen," a non-committal DeCosta said at the Ravens' pre-draft news conference. "And I would never want to say this or that. But, I can tell you this: Mark Andrews is a warrior. He's played his butt off for us."
The Ravens do have legitimate reasons to consider a deal. Trading or releasing Andrews would bring about $5.9 million in dead cap but save $11 million. His successor, Isaiah Likely, is already on the roster.
The GM seems to be hinting that it's time.
And that's just fine with the Steelers and the rest of the AFC North, who have been bullied by Andrews for years ... and would love to have him move as far away from this division as possible.
