Offensive line protection was an issue for the Texans last season, as C.J. Stroud was sacked 52 times, contributing to a lackluster sophomore season.
This offseason, Houston weakened their offensive line by trading Laremy Tunsil to the Washington Commanders for multiple draft picks and sending guard Kenyon Green to the Philadelphia Eagles for safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson and a 2026 sixth-round pick.
The Texans had a plan when they dealt Tunsil, who is entering the final year of his contract and will be 31 years old before the start of the 2025 season.
Houston did not want to pay Tunsil the amount of money he was seeking in a contract extension. Quite frankly, that was the right decision by Houston's front office. Tunsil committed 19 penalties in 2024, including 12 false starts.
The numbers are not certain, but it could be assumed that Tunsil was seeking at least $25 million per season, which is what he currently earns annually. That is simply too rich for a tackle who struggles with penalties and is over 30 years old.
As for Robinson, the former Jacksonville Jaguars tackle was acquired by the Minnesota Vikings during last season when Christian Darrisaw suffered a season-ending knee injury against the Los Angeles Rams.
Including his time in Jacksonville last season, Robinson started all 17 games and was a key component in stabilizing Minnesota's offensive line. The 29-year-old left tackle will look to do the same for the Texans.
Although the offensive line is still a work in progress — to say the least — and Houston did not initially help themselves out by trading away two starters, signing Robinson to a cheaper deal, while enhancing the long-term future with the haul of draft picks will end up being the correct decision.
