The NBA's greatest rivalry was renewed on Saturday when the Celtics hosted the Lakers. Here are three takeaways from Boston's 111-101 win. Celtics still the class of the NBA The defending champs responded from an early eight-point deficit to win their fourth consecutive game. Boston's star duo, shooting guard Jaylen Brown and small forward Jayson Tatum, combined for 71 points. Tatum had 40 points, giving him three 40-point regular-season games against the Lakers, the most in Celtics franchise history. (h/t Stathead) He added 12 rebounds, eight assists, two steals and a block to remind everyone that he might be the NBA's most underappreciated superstar. Brown's 31 points were his third-most against the Lakers in 16 regular-season games. The 2024 Finals MVP also chipped in with six rebounds, two assists and three steals as the Celtics turned up the defensive intensity after following the opening 12 minutes. The Celtics have stiff competition in their repeat quest, namely from the red-hot Cavaliers (53-10, first in Eastern Conference), who've won 13 in a row, and the Thunder (52-11, first in Western Conference), riding a six-game winning streak. But unlike those teams, Boston's core has years of playoff experience. With the regular season entering its final month, the Celtics are as formidable as ever. LeBron James injury puts Lakers' title dreams on pause James suffered a groin injury early in the fourth quarter and did not return. After the game, ESPN NBA reporter Dave McMenamin shared, "One source said that initial thought is that it will sideline James for a matter of weeks, not a matter of days." While it's never a good time to lose James, an absence this close to the start of the postseason is the worst thing for Los Angeles. Saturday's loss dropped the Lakers (40-22, third in Western Conference) a half-game behind the Nuggets for second place. Only two games ahead of the Rockets for the West's 5-seed, Los Angeles could soon enter a rough patch. The Lakers have three games remaining on their current road trip, including a back-to-back against the Bucks (36-26, fourth in Eastern Conference) and Nuggets (41-22) this Thursday and Friday. Lakers are Luka's show The Doncic trade keeps on giving for the Lakers. In any other season, losing James would have been a death knell. While we expect Los Angeles to take a step back with the league's all-time leading scorer sidelined, Doncic should be able to keep it competitive. The five-time All-NBA guard led the Lakers with 34 points on Saturday, shooting 11-of-22, including 5-of-10 from deep, and adding eight rebounds, three assists and a steal. Doncic has scored at least 30 points in three consecutive games and is averaging 28.5 points per game in his last eight games. The Lakers will need plenty of Luka magic while James recovers. It's a good thing the Mavericks were selling.
Los Angeles Lakers fans held their collective breath on Saturday after LeBron James suffered a groin injury against the Boston Celtics. James left the Lakers’ prime time matchup against the Celtics with just over seven minutes left at TD Garden in Boston, Mass. The Lakers star made a couple of spin moves in the paint that appeared to strain his groin (video here). He exited the contest with 22 points, 14 rebounds, and 9 assists on 11/23 shooting as the Lakers lost 111-101 without him. ESPN’s Dave McMenamin reported there is belief internally that LeBron would be sidelined for “a matter of weeks” and “not a matter of days.” LeBron did not sound as worried when he spoke to reporters about the severity of the injury. He believed there is “not much concern” with the issue going forward. For what it’s worth, James pegged himself to be day-to-day pending further tests. However, James did admit that his mind immediately went to the groin injury he suffered during the 2018-19 season, his first year with the Lakers. That year, LeBron hurt his groin during the Lakers’ Christmas Day matchup against the Golden State Warriors. He missed 17 games following the injury. James added that he does not think his current injury is anywhere as severe as the one he suffered in 2018. But he made sure to knock on the wooden locker behind him after bringing it up. The Lakers entered Saturday’s contest on an 8-game winning streak and tied with the Denver Nuggets for the second-best record in the West. If James has to miss any time, Luka Doncic will have to carry the load for the Lakers with just 20 games left in their season.
The Cincinnati Bengals reportedly signed one of quarterback Joe Burrow's top passing game targets to a long-term deal on Saturday. But it was not one of the two big players everybody was waiting for. That does not mean it is not a significant deal. The Bengals reportedly re-signed veteran tight end Mike Gesicki to a new three-year, $25 million contract extension that will keep him from reaching the unrestricted free-agent market this week. The 2024 season was Gesicki's first year with the Bengals, and he ended up becoming a major factor in the team's passing game with 65 receptions for 665 yards. He previously played for the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots before joining the Bengals. On one hand, Gesicki is a nice player to have back. But it is also interesting getting him secured on a new deal took priority over everything else the Bengals are dealing with this offseason. The top two wide receivers — Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins — are in need of long-term contracts, with Higgins being franchise-tagged for the second year in a row. They also have to figure out a way to upgrade a defense that has been one of the league's worst the past two years, while trying to deal with the retirement of Sam Hubbard and the fact that their best defensive player, Trey Hendrickson, is shopping his services around the league in an effort to find a trade.
We had a major trade in the last few hours, announced by the Colorado Avalanche. They acquired a new second-line center, Brock Nelson, in a trade involving multiple pieces. 'The Avs acquire Brock Nelson and William Dufour from the New York Islanders in exchange for Kylington, Calum Ritchie, a 1st-round pick in 2026 or 2027, and a conditional 3rd-round pick in 2028.' In short, this trade seems interesting for Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens. Brock Nelson's acquisition pushes Casey Mittelstadt out in Colorado: an opportunity for Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens? That's the current speculation: 'His name has been circulating a lot in trade rumors in recent weeks, and considering that the Avalanche acquired Brock Nelson last night, Casey Mittelstadt is clearly available in Colorado. If I were Kent Hughes, I would definitely call the Avalanche to inquire about the asking price.' Marc-Olivier Beaudoin A major storyline to follow today in Montreal. Casey Mittelstadt, 26 years old, is a 6-foot-1, 195-pound center. The 8th overall pick by the Buffalo Sabres in 2017 (1st round) has accumulated 230 points in 420 career NHL games, including 77 goals, and has recorded 34 points in 63 games so far this season with the Colorado Avalanche as their second-line center. Nelson's acquisition has clearly cost him his spot. Mittelstadt also registered 47 points in 62 games and 59 points in 82 games with the Buffalo Sabres over the last two seasons.
