The Houston Oilers relocated after the completion of the 1996 NFL season and became the Tennessee Oilers. That means that Heisman Trophy-winning running back Eddie George was the final first-round draft selection in the Houston era of the organization's history.
George, since his playing career ended, had been involved in various ventures before becoming the head football coach at Tennessee State University in 2021, a Historically Black College or University that shares the Titans' stadium in Nashville. After a few successful seasons at the FCS level with the Tigers, however, George was offered a five-year contract by Bowling Green University, an FBS program, and he agreed to become the team's next head coach on Saturday.
George had an illustrious playing career with the Titans' organization, winning the 1996 Offensive Rookie of the Year Award and earning his way into four Pro Bowls and onto two All-Pro teams. He is still the franchise's all-time leader in rushing yards and also ranks third in touchdowns and fourth in yards per game.
Tennessee State did not have a winning record in the three seasons before George's arrival, but the team finished his tenure with two straight winning seasons and an NCAA Tournament berth in 2024. Bowling Green is 20-19 over the last three years and has made it to three consecutive bowl games. The pressure will be high for the former Titans RB, but his history would indicate that he will surpass those expectations and be just fine.
