Versatility is a coveted skillset that can propel NFL draft prospects to an early selection, and that is potentially the case for college football's best linebacker, according to Todd McShay.
The former ESPN analyst raved about Georgia linebacker Jalon Walker this week as the 2025 NFL Draft approaches. The Butkus Award winner racked up 60 total tackles (11 for loss) with 6.5 sacks, two pass breakups and two fumble recoveries as a junior last season.
Walker, a former five-star prospect, took on a unique role for head coach Kirby Smart's defense in 2024. The 6-foot-2, 245-pound defender played inside linebacker on early downs, for the most part, before lining up on the edge to rush the passer on third downs.
It's a hybrid position that Smart and co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Glenn Schumann have used well in the past with future NFL stars like Quay Walker (Packers).
And Jalon Walker flourished there during a First-Team All-American season that witnessed Georgia (11-3) capturing another SEC championship and College Football Playoff berth.
“He's a hybrid, and as defensive coordinator, my mind immediately goes to I can use this guy in like five different spots," McShay said on the "Todd McShay Show" on Wednesday. "And it doesn't matter if it's first and 10, or third and 18, or third and three. There's a place on the field for him.”
Walker was at his best against Georgia's top competition. The Salisbury, North Carolina, native was a menace against Texas, totaling 10 tackles for loss and four sacks in the two matchups combined.
“When you talk to defensive coordinators, whether college or NFL, it's like a drinking game," McShay said. "‘He makes us multiple. Everything's multiple. We need to be multiple here. We got to be multiple.’ ... Jalon gives you that.”
While Walker seems to have the ability to play multiple roles at the next level, McShay believes that he is best suited for the EDGE position, honing his skills as a pass rusher.
“I actually think, interestingly enough, he's played more off the ball linebacker," he said. "(But) I actually think he's a better EDGE. ... (Walker has) explosive burst off the edge. I wrote this in my notes: sudden, sudden, sudden rusher. Everything is sudden from his feet to his hands."
The one knock on Walker, according to McShay, is some inconsistencies in his production. Besides the monster performances agains the Longhorns, Walker posted sacks in only two other matchups in 14 total games.
That's why Walker was placed in McShay's "Tier Two" in regards to EDGE prospects, while Penn State's Abdul Carter is the only member of the top tier.
Even still, Waker will likely be one of the top defenders off the board this spring. And he could bolster his draft stock at the NFL combine (Feb. 27-March 2) with a stellar performance in Indianapolis.
The 2025 NFL Draft will take place from April 24-26 in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
