Ever since Super Bowl LIX came to a close with the Philadelphia Eagles defeating the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22, it seemed as if everyone was waiting for tight end Travis Kelce to break the silence.
He spoke briefly in the locker room after the game, but fans were yearning for him to get into it. The game, the reaction, the potential retirement — all of it was begging to be addressed.
On Wednesday morning, Kelce obliged on the latest episode of the New Heights podcast with his brother, Jason Kelce.
The two dove all the way in, talking about what it was like both playing in the game and watching from the stands, and where Travis goes now in his career. Kelce gave some interesting comments about his potential retirement, saying that he owed his teammates to be whole-hearted in his decision, and to not to be "half-assing it" if he chose to return.
These words have driven some fans to bring of examples of him "half-assing" it in the Super Bowl on Sunday.
"I’m gonna take some time to figure it out," Kelce said. "And I think I owe it to my teammates that if I do come back that it’s gonna be a wholehearted decision and I’m not half-assing it, and I’m fully here for them."
In other words, don't do this?

The play in question came late in the third quarter, with Kansas City trying to find any semblance of a spark on offense while trailing 27-0. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes was scrambling in the pocket with three Eagles defenders hot on his tail, and he decided to tuck it and run.
Meanwhile, Kelce is seen in the screen just standing at midfield, doing nothing while watching his QB try to make a play. Kelce had an opportunity to block his defender at the end of the play, but continued to play bystander and watch has his defender made the tackle.
It may seem like a straw-man argument, cherry-picking a single play from the game that showed poor effort from Kelce, but this idea of not being all the way bought in was consistent throughout the year. It was a common narrative all season long that Kelce was taking it easy during the regular season so that he could be ready for the playoff run, and while that may have been the case, the future Hall of Famer didn't do a whole lot in the postseason, catching 13 passes for 175 yards and a touchdown in three games.
Can he buy in enough to make another run at it with the Chiefs next season, or will the allure of retired life alongside his megastar girlfriend Taylor Swift he too big of a pull? We will have to wait and see what decision Kelce makes over the coming weeks.
