Last season, the Kansas City Chiefs biggest problem was keeping quarterback Patrick Mahomes upright. That problem was exacerbated by the Philadelphia Eagles manhandling them at the line of the scrimmage in the Super Bowl.
The Chiefs traded guard Joe Thuney to the Chicago Bears. They are re-working and re-tooling an aging offensive line which needs to get tougher and meaner.
Kansas City started the overhaul by retaining the other starting guard, Trey Smith. They did not lock him up with a new contract, but gave him the franchise tag. By receiving the tag he is guaranteed to be in a Chiefs' uniform for 2025, but after that, no one knows.
Smith is even uncertain as to what his future holds.
Smith gave his thoughts on his future to Kay Adams on the Up and Adams show.
"Ultimately, I can only focus on just working out and training. I love Kansas City; it's my home. I love the Chiefs," said Smith. "The fans in Kansas City are some of the best people I've ever been around. Ultimately, I would love to stay there. That's my plan."
The Chiefs made some moves on the offensive line this offseason. However they did not bring anyone in who would strike fear in the hearts of opposing defensive linemen.
"As of now, it does look like the Chiefs are planning on extending their star lineman. Patrick Mahomes and Chris Jones are restructuring their deals to give this franchise more salary cap space," said Dylan Fine from The Sporting News. "The Chiefs’ organization has expressed its intent on reaching a long-term extension with Smith before the July 15 deadline."
Kansas City will be looking to add to their offensive line in the 2025 NFL Draft next month. They will continue to search for more players to help keep Mahomes standing upright in 2025. ... likely with Smith as a foundational piece.
