Vikings Aren't 'Forever' Out on Steelers QB Target

The Pittsburgh Steelers seem like the only team seriously in on quarterback Aaron Rodgers, but that doesn’t mean they should take that status for granted.

The NFL offseason is chaotic, its players and decision-makers can change their minds quickly, and an infinite number of variables can change things between the later stages of free agency and the flurry of Sunday kickoffs in Week 1.

It would behoove Pittsburgh to make good on Rodgers’ interest and get a deal done as soon as possible. He may have just a single suitor for now, but another team joining (or re-joining) the race could give the quarterback leverage and make the team’s decision under center rather dicey.

Minnesota Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah revealed the Steelers could once again have competition for Rodgers’ services.

"A player like him is always gonna be in those conversations," Adofo-Mensah said about Rodgers on Wednesday, per Albert Breer. "But from our delineations at that time, we're happy with where we are going forward. Obviously, the caliber of player [he is], it had to be part of our conversations."

"Right now...we're happy with our [quarterback] room," Adofo-Mensah added.

Minnesota was considered a dark horse landing spot for Rodgers. With Sam Darnold out of the picture, the need for a second quality quarterback emerged. Signing Rodgers would give Minnesota the opportunity to let J.J. McCarthy truly recover as long as necessary and provide him with an immeasurable mentor.

Rodgers also seemed interested in the Vikings due to their strong supporting cast, complete with respected head coach Kevin O’Connell and receiver Justin Jefferson giving him legitimate championship aspirations.

However, if McCarthy is ready to go, the need to sit him ceases to exist; if they’re high on him, he’s starting, and there wouldn’t be any room for Rodgers.

That should give the Steelers the edge they need to lure him to Western Pennsylvania, but as Adofo-Mensah noted, things can change quickly in the NFL.

"For me to sit here and say anything is 100% forever, that's just not the job," Adofo-Mensah said, per ESPN's Kevin Seifert.

Rodgers signing elsewhere isn’t likely at this point, but it definitely doesn’t help Pittsburgh to wait and see what develops. This is as much the quarterback’s decision as the team’s, but if the Steelers are hesitating, they could find themselves in trouble.
