The Tennessee Titans shocked nobody when they picked Miami quarterback Cam Ward with the top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft on Thursday.
He had been the consensus favorite to go first overall for several weeks before the Titans selected him. They see him as their next franchise quarterback.
He was over the moon when he got selected, and was about to speak during his first media conference on Friday when he was surprised by legendary quarterback Warren Moon. Moon gave Ward his blessing to wear his retired No. 1 jersey after it was originally retired in 2006.
Moon wore the No. 1 jersey for the Houston Oilers before the team moved to Tennessee in 1997. He also played for the Minnesota Vikings, Seattle Seahawks, and Kansas City Chiefs.
He brought out a Titans jersey with the No. 1 and Ward's name on the back of it. Once the two posed for a photo, Moon explained why he came to the presser.
"I just came here because I got a lot of respect for this young man right here. I wore the No. 1 for a lot of different reasons and for a long time, starting back in 1976. Now I'm part of the Titans family, and my Oiler jersey will probably never be worn again. But the Tennessee Titans jersey is going to be worn by Cam to kind of revitalize it," Moon said, via ESPN's Turron Davenport.
Ward will get to rock the jersey for the first time when the Titans open their 2025 regular season in September.
He spent the 2024 season with Miami and helped the program win 10 games, finishing with 4,313 yards through the air, 39 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. Before that, he played at Washington State and Incarnate Word.
It's a new era for Titans football, and Ward hopes to start winning with the franchise as soon as possible.
