The Saints much like the Bucs the past few years have put together a team that isn’t getting the proper respect they deserve. The truth is the squad they have assembled is low-key underrated and could really push for the Super Bowl.
It starts with the elite coaching staff they have. Kellen Moore just came off a SB win with one of the least talented offenses from a player standpoint. They only had AJ Brown, Devonta Smith, and Saquon Barkley. Not good at all. And he managed to get a great season out of that fraud Jalen Hurts. In LA with that overrated social media QB Justin Herbert, he managed to get the Chargers all the way to the 18th ranked offense. And don’t get me started on the genius of Brandon Staley. After riding Aaron Donald to the HC gig in LA, he decided to step down after Herbert gave up 63 points on defense in 2023. Now he’s in NOLA to elevate the talented guys on that side of that ball.
The players they have are also elite. Derek Carr has made the playoffs at least once in his career. Once he stops trying to hospitalize Chris Olave, that duo will be deadly. And Olave will have help opposite him in Brandin Cooks, who you know is good because he has played for twenty teams in two years. Kellen even has his own Saquon Barkley in the weapon that is Alvin Kamara. Everyone knows RBs only get better as they get older. Hell, Kamara managed to get 26 points in PPR as recently as 2023. He’s still got it. Don’t check what his non-PPR points were that game. On the opposite side of the ball, Cameron Jordan is just reaching his prime in his thirties and they have SB experience in Justin Reid, the safety from KC.
The Saints had a rough campaign in 2024, no getting around that. But with the pennies they saved up for FA, they were able to surround their old roster with even older talent. They do have the draft though to add a lot of really good prospects once they figure out how to pay those guys instead of veterans. It’s a roster built for nothing, and that is why they can challenge for a SB.
