When news broke that the New York Giants were signing journeyman quarterback Jameis Winston to a two-year, $8 million contract, no one was more excited about the development than Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean, and the rest of the Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive backs.
One of the least risk-averse quarterbacks in the NFL, Winston has thrown an astounding 111 interceptions over his decade-spanning professional career, which is a stat made all the more incredible by the fact that he spent half of that time as a backup with seven or fewer starts per season.
Winston’s interception mark is so impressive – in a bad way – that Jimmy Kempski of The Philadelphia Voice shared an absolutely incredible Jalen Hurts stat to put it into context on social media.
“If Jalen Hurts’ next 34 passes get all get picked off, he would still have a lower career interception percentage than Jameis Winston,” Kempski wrote.Whoa, crazy, right? Well, it’s true: while Winston has thrown roughly 1,200 more passes than Hurts, he has been picked off 72 fewer times, with the former holding an interception percentage of 3.5 versus 2.0 from the Super Bowl MVP. While Winston does throw the ball a good bit more often than Hurts, an average of 39 more times over a 17 game season per Pro Football Reference, his career averages would suggest he would still throw twice as many interceptions – 18 vs. nine – versus only six more touchdowns – 25 vs. 19 – over that sample size.
Now granted, stats – real and projected – don’t actually matter in the heat of the moment. The number of interceptions thrown by a quarterback in the past has no actual influence on whether or not they will throw one on the next play. With that being said, Winston has been cavalier with the ball at every stop in his NFL career so far, from his time playing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, to the New Orleans Saints, and last year when he was throwing balls to Elijah Moore and Jerry Jeudy with the Cleveland Browns.
Do the New York Giants have the best supporting cast of Winston’s career? Yes. Could he look to be more conservative to remain on the field, instead of being benched for a rookie? Yes, as well. But in the end, if history is of any indication, Winston is going to Winston, which means players like DeJean and Mitchell will likely catch almost as many interceptions as players like Malik Nabers and Jalin Hyatt will catch touchdowns when the Eagles and Giants square up this fall.

With one round down and six to go, several things remain unanswered in the 2025 NFL Draft. As we gear up for Rounds 2 and 3, here are five pressing questions for Day 2. 1. Where does Shedeur Sanders land? With two of the first four picks on Friday, the Cleveland Browns will be a viable landing spot for Sanders. It would be a bit of a shame if he does go to Cleveland, considering the Browns missed an opportunity to draft his college teammate, Travis Hunter, at No. 2, instead trading the selection for a haul of picks to the Jacksonville Jaguars. But Sanders would give Cleveland a serviceable pathway from Deshaun Watson, who's devolved into one of the league's worst quarterbacks since being traded to the Browns. After a long Thursday night, Sanders likely won't have nearly as long of a wait to hear his name called on Friday. He could go as soon as the first pick of the night at No. 33. 2. What are the Saints, Steelers plans at quarterback? If Sanders is off the board by the time the New Orleans Saints pick at No. 40, they'll have to scramble for a backup option with starting quarterback Derek Carr's status uncertain for Week 1. The Pittsburgh Steelers are in even worse shape, with their next pick not coming until the third round (No. 83). Quarterbacks Tyler Shough, Will Howard and Jalen Milroe could all be consolation prizes, but none offer Sanders' upside. After passing on him once, neither will likely have the chance to select him again, which could be a costly mistake, as both have uncertain quarterback outlooks for next season. 3. Who are the best offensive players remaining? In addition to Sanders, Missouri wide receiver Luther Burden III (6-foot, 206 pounds), Ohio State running back TreVeyon Henderson (5-foot-10, 202 pounds) and LSU tight end Mason Taylor (6-foot-5, 251 pounds) are among the best skill-position players remaining. Most of the top linemen are off the board, with Minnesota's Aireontae Ersery (6-foot-6, 331 pounds) and Boston College's Ozzy Trapilo (6-foot-8, 316 pounds) among the most likely to be picked on Day 2. 4. Best defensive players? Teams will have several top-flight defenders to choose from at the top of the second round. Michigan cornerback Will Johnson (6-foot-2, 194 pounds), the No. 8 overall prospect according to SIS, 6-foot-3, 251-pound Marshall edge Mike Green (The Athletic's Dane Brugler's No. 10 prospect) and Boston College edge Donovan Ezeiruaku (6-foot-3, 248 pounds) could easily have been picked in the first round but were overlooked. Teams with early second-round picks, including the Browns, Titans and Raiders, are in a great position to add more starter-level talent on Friday. 5. What teams will make the most noise on Day 2? The Seattle Seahawks are in line to be a major player during Rounds 2 and 3. Seattle has four picks (Nos. 50, 52, 82, 92) to address its defense and receiving corps after parting with DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett earlier this offseason. After Thursday's trade with the Jaguars, Cleveland also has four picks (Nos. 33, 36, 67, 94) as it tries to turn the page on the Watson era.

The Stanley Cup playoffs continued on Thursday night with four more games. Here are some key takeaways from the action. Not even the Toronto Maple Leafs can let this series slip away Finding success in the Stanley Cup playoffs has been an issue for the Toronto Maple Leafs, having lost in the first round in seven of the past eight years. Every year it seems inevitable that they will invent a new way to lose a series. But letting this series against the Ottawa Senators slip away would be unthinkable, even for them. Thanks to their 3-2 overtime win in Ottawa, the Maple Leafs now have a commanding 3-0 series lead with a chance to complete a sweep later this week. Only four teams in NHL history have come back from a 3-0 series deficit, and Ottawa just does not seem to have the juice to make this a series. Toronto is outplaying the Senators, getting better goaltending and its stars are shining brighter. Thursday's game had an unlikely hero with defenseman Simon Benoit scoring the winning goal. Tampa Bay's Brandon Hagel should be suspended The Tampa Bay Lightning could be in some trouble in their first-round series against the Florida Panthers. Not only did Thursday's 2-0 loss put them into a 2-0 series deficit, but they could also be facing the possibility of being without one of their top forwards in Brandon Hagel. At least, they should be if the NHL's Department of Player Safety does its job. Hagel was assessed a five-minute major for interference for a brutal, late hit to Panthers star Aleksander Barkov. That is simply not a good hit, and Hagel is very fortunate he was not ejected from the game. Barkov did not have possession of the puck, it was not close to him and it was a high hit toward his head. It is the type of hit that should be textbook for a suspension. But with the DoPS, there is always some uncertainty as to what they are going to do, especially when it comes to the playoffs. Hits like that should not be tolerated. Barkov, who is one of Florida's best players, exited and did not return, and there was no update on his status after the game. Kirill Kaprizov making early Conn Smythe case The Minnesota Wild did not get much attention coming into the playoffs given the way they stumbled down the stretch run of the regular season. But injuries played a big role in those struggles, and now that they are healthy, they are starting to show what they can do. The biggest return has been star forward Kirill Kaprizov who missed half of the season due to injury. He was having an MVP-caliber season when healthy, and he has picked that right back up so far in the playoffs. He scored two more goals on Thursday to help the Wild roll to a 5-2 win and take a 2-1 series lead over the Vegas Golden Knights. It might be early in the playoffs, but he is definitely in the Conn Smythe Trophy discussion so far. He has now scored two goals in consecutive games, and in the first three games of the series, he has four goals, three assists and seven total points. Connor Hellebuyck still has something to prove Connor Hellebuyck is one of the best goalies in the NHL during the regular season and is one of the biggest reasons the Winnipeg Jets finished with the best record in the league. He has won two Vezina Trophies already, has a real chance to win a third this season and should probably get more MVP love. For all of that success, he still has to answer critics for the way his past two playoff runs have gone and how poorly he played in them. After a strong start to their first-round series against the St. Louis Blues, those postseason struggles resurfaced on Thursday in a blowout loss that saw him allow six goals on 25 shots before getting benched.
Struggling Chicago Cubs rookie could return to Detroit Tigers
The hot corner struggles for the Chicago Cubs continued in Tuesday’s thrilling victory at Wrigley Field against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Gage Workman got the start and made both of Chicago’s errors in what turned out to be the best game of the young season so far. Matt Shaw was the Opening Day starter for Chicago at the third base spot, but the top prospect’s first stint in the big leagues turned sour rather quickly. Shaw slashed .172/.294/.241 with a .535 OPS in his 18 games and 58 at-bats to begin his professional career and was sent down to Iowa last week to work out the kinks in his offensive game. With Shaw being down in Triple-A for the time being, the Cubs officially brought back an old friend on Wednesday who has an established big league-level glove. The Chicago Cubs have DFA’d Gage Workman Per reports, the Cubs officially designated Workman for assignment on Wednesday and have signed Nicky Lopez to the active roster prior to the first pitch of the series finale against the Dodgers. Workman was a Rule 5 draft pick of the Cubs this past offseason and made the team after hitting well in spring training. In nine games and 14 at-bats at the big league level this year, he hit .214 and drove in three runs. Workman could return to the Tigers organization. Since he's a Rule 5 draft pick, if no other team claims him, the Cubs must offer him back to the Tigers organization for $50K. Lopez was with the Cubs in spring training this year and was granted his release after he did not make the travel roster to Japan. The Naperville native spent last year with the White Sox and collected six at-bats to begin 2025 with the Angels before Zach Neto returned from injury. Lopez is known for being a strong defender and can perhaps aid the issues that the team has had at third base to begin the season.
