The Kansas City Chiefs, under the guidance of Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes, made their name by scoring points for fun and leaving teams in their wake. But over the last 18 months, that hasn't happened very regularly.
Coming up against the Cleveland Browns, the Chiefs, on paper, appear to have this one won rather easily, but as we know, games aren't won on paper. Plus, the Browns defense still gives quarterbacks headaches, with Jim Schwartz dialing up blitzes from anywhere.
This season, the Chiefs have won by more than one score just three times and have only scored 30 points twice, but in a bold prediction, CBS Sports thinks the Kansas City offense will roll against Cleveland. Is an "explosion'' coming?
"The two-time defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs are gasping and wheezing through the 2024 season, despite what their 12-1 record says," CBS Sports writes. "They have the lowest point differential (+56) for a team with a 12-1 record or better in their first 13 games in NFL history, per CBS Sports research, and their 10 wins by one through seven points through 13 games are also the most all time.
"The difference in Week 15 will be that Cleveland will turn the ball over too much, thus giving Mahomes too many short fields. Quarterback Jameis Winston has thrown nine interceptions since becoming the Browns starting quarterback in Week 8, which is the most in the league in that span."
The Chiefs offense has only scored 19 points in each of their last two games, so that doesn't exactly instill confidence, but that doesn't mean they can't turn it on in Cleveland.
With a real shot at clinching the AFC's No. 1 seed over the next few weeks, this game looms as a banana skin and one that the Chiefs must carefully navigate.
CBS Sports thinks the Chiefs will roll to a win here, but at this time of year, style points could be worth little—it's the result that matters, and as long as Kansas City scores one more point than Cleveland, it'll be happy.
