The Rockford IceHogs announced that A.J. Spellacy will join their ranks. The announcement was made on April 23, the morning of the IceHogs' first playoff game, in which they visit the Chicago Wolves. A.J. Spellacy will more than likely only practice with Rockford, but is eligible to play.

Spellacy is 19 with a February birthday, meaning that, because he is under 20 and has a contract with the Canadian Hockey League, he will return for his fourth season with the Windsor Spitfires next season. He had his best season in Windsor with 37 points in 62 games. Windor's playoffs ended on April 22 when the Kitchener Rangers completed a "reverse sweep." Spellacy scored one goal and two assists in five playoff games.

Blackhawks fans remember Spellacy as one of the more "exciting" prospects during last season's training camp. Drafted in the third round in 2024, Spellacy drew hype due to his excellent effort during training camp and into the Blackhawks' preseason. At 6'3" and 205 lbs, Spellacy is one of the larger forwards that general manager Kyle Davidson drafted. Spellacy's background in football is evident in his athleticism on the ice. He's not just big and fast, he's also agile.

While he is an interesting prospect, the jury is still out on how his game will eventually translate to pro hockey. At best, I think the Blackhawks have a solid bottom-six winger. Once he turns 20, I see Spellacy spending time in Rockford before getting a chance in the NHL.
