Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin is still coming to terms with what he’s done, three days after scoring his 895th career NHL goal to break Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record.
Ovechkin returned to practice on Wednesday ahead of Thursday's first game back home in Washington with the Capitals.
“It’s crazy,” Ovechkin said, reflecting on the milestone after skating in front of 895 local school kids at MedStar Capitals Iceplex. “Crazy, fun. It’s a great time right now. Still can’t believe it.”
Ovechkin passed Gretzky on Sunday with a power-play goal against fellow Russian Ilya Sorokin, goalie of the New York Islanders.

“I don’t know. I’ll see. Game by game.”
The conversation will now shift to whether the Capitals star can hit an even more surreal milestone: 1,000 goals. Ovechkin discussed it with Capitals beat reporter Sammi Silber.
“I don’t know,” Ovechkin said. “I’ll see. Game by game.”
Speaking to "Good Morning America" on Wednesday, Ovechkin reminisced on Sunday's moment and called it a “tremendous honor” to have Gretzky’s support throughout "The Gr8 Chase."
“To have a dinner with him, to know him, to break his record… that’s something I’ll never forget,” Ovechkin said.
Ovechkin is currently at 42 goals (after missing 16 games earlier this year) through the season—fourth-most in the league—and has one year left on his contract.
Ovechkin has not said when he plans to retire, and when asked how he made it this far, Ovechkin pointed to his support system.
“Without my teammates, my family, without the support, we would never have reached that milestone,” Ovechkin said.
The Capitals will honor Ovechkin with a pregame ceremony Thursday when they host Carolina. It will be his first home game as the NHL’s all-time goal leader.
