Capitals make surprising trade for rival's winger

The Washington Capitals are clearly a top contender for the Stanley Cup this season.

General manager Chris Patrick put together a team with surprising chemistry and offensive prowess, leaving some to wonder if a trade would even be necessary to bolster the roster.

Those wonders were put to rest on Friday ahead of the 3 p.m. ET deadline when news broke Washington had acquired forward Anthony Beauvillier from the Pittsburgh Penguins for a 2025 second-round pick.

It's the second time Washington has gone to its arch nemesis for a deal this season. In November, Patrick acquired Capitals center Lars Eller from Pittsburgh for a 2025 fifth-rounder and 2027 third-rounder.

Beauvillier (20 points, 13 goals, seven assists) is expected to slot in on Washington's third line which is in need of an offensive boost having only scored 13 goals this season.

Winger Jakub Vrana was claimed off waivers by the Nashville Predators on Thursday in a preceding move that may have indicated Friday's acquisition.

It's not clear when Beauvillier will travel to Washington and be available to play for the team.

The news of the trade reportedly broke while reporters were speaking with Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery ahead of the team's morning skate, but he was unable to provide comment because the deal wasn't made official yet to his knowledge.

Washington (88 points) sits seven points clear of any other team in the Eastern Conference and has been jockeying with the Winnipeg Jets in the West for the Presidents Trophy (awarded to the best regular season team).

Friday, it'll face the Detroit Red Wings at home with most fans' focus trained on Alexander Ovechkin's chase for the NHL's all-time goals record (894).
