The Edmonton Oilers hosted the San Jose Sharks on Friday at Rogers Place, looking to snap a two-game skid. They came into the night trailing the Los Angeles Kings by four points in the standings, with both teams having just four games left before the NHL playoffs.
Oilers star Connor McDavid is focused on winning hockey games—not chasing accolades. But when you’re that good, the accolades tend to follow.
McDavid picked up an assist on Evan Bouchard’s power-play goal, which opened the scoring 6:47 into the first period.
With that assist, McDavid was involved in a game-opening goal for the 165th time in his NHL career, passing the legendary Wayne Gretzky (164) for the most in Oilers history.

This isn’t the first time McDavid has passed Gretzky in the record books. He’s already surpassed "The Great One" for the most assists in a single NHL postseason and for the most points in Oilers history.
McDavid is still only 28 years old and is still in his prime. By the time he retires, he could become arguably the greatest player of all time.
The Richmond Hill, Ontario native is in his 10th NHL season and has already racked up over 1,075 career points. Heading into Friday night, McDavid had 26 goals and 67 assists for a total of 93 points on the year.
The 6-foot-1 center is trying to reach 100 points in a season for the eighth time in his career.
