Controversy Erupts Over Kraken's Overtime Goal Against the Canadiens
Stephen Brashear-Imagn Images

The game-winning goal, scored by the Seattle Kraken against the Montreal Canadiens last night, continues to spark discussion today.

Let's recall that Martin St-Louis' squad fell 5-4 in overtime in Seattle, causing the Habs to drop a crucial point in the NHL standings.

But let's talk about it.

How did the Canadiens lose that point?

See the sequence in question:

Yes, it happened extremely fast, but was it legal?

That's the question many are asking today.

Did Brandon Montour cheat by taking off before the puck was even dropped by the referee at the start of overtime?

On this point, the footage leaves absolutely no doubt:

Clearly, that goal should never have been allowed, but at the same time, it happened so fast.. and I don't believe it's eligible for video review, unlike an offside.

It's definitely frustrating to watch, I'll admit.

In the end, Brandon Montour outraced everyone and scored with less than four seconds elapsed in overtime, stealing a valuable point from the Habs.

Despite the loss, Juraj Slafkovsky was once again incredible, while young goalie Jakub Dobes looked shakier.

Expect to see a lot of Samuel Montembeault in net for the remainder of the regular season.
