Golden Knights make some well-disciplined NHL history

Penalties were down to an historically low level during the 2024-25 NHL season all across the league. The one team that benefitted from that the most was the Vegas Golden Knights.

With their regular-season schedule now officially complete, they made some fascinating history by becoming the first team in NHL history to play an 82-game season and be penalized less than 200 times.

The Golden Knights were only penalized 197 times during the season.

That comes out to just 2.4 penalties per game.

Even in a year where penalties were down across the league, that is an insanely low number.

Just for comparison, the New York Islanders were the second least penalized team in the NHL went into Thursday's slate of games with 208 penalties against them in 81 games.

No other team was penalized less than 228 teams, while the Detroit Red Wings joined the Islanders and Golden Knights as the only teams to have less than 240 penalties.

The Florida Panthers were the NHL's most penalized team with 340 penalties for the season.

Where it really gets interesting is that Vegas was not really getting a huge advantage in terms of power play differential. While staying out of the penalty box is a huge advantage on its own, it becomes an even bigger advantage if you can draw more penalties.

But the Golden Knights were also at the bottom of the NHL in penalties drawn, with their opponents only being penalized 219 times.

Their games simply did not devolve into special teams games. While Vegas had the second best power play in the NHL, it also had the 26th ranked penalty kill unit. So there is definitely some incentive for them to keep staying out of the penalty box in the playoffs.
