Tampa Bay Lightning forward Brandon Hagel was feeling quite patriotic after helping Canada defeat the United States 3-2 in overtime in Thursday's 4 Nations Face-Off championship game.
Following the game, Hagel posted a screenshot of a group chat titled "CHAMPIONS," complete with a Canadian flag. Among those in the chat were Pittsburgh Penguins forward Sidney Crosby (SC), Florida Panthers forward Sam Reinhart (SR), Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand (BM), Vegas Golden Knights forward Mark Stone (MS) and Winnipeg Jets defenseman Josh Morrissey (JM).

The post seems innocuous enough on its own, but there's a story behind it.
In Saturday's round-robin game, the U.S. defeated Canada 3-1 in one of the most intense hockey games in recent history. That game featured three fights in the first nine seconds, starting with Hagel fighting Panthers and U.S. forward Matthew Tkachuk two seconds in. The two already don't like each other from playing for in-state rivals, but they took their rivalry to another level in this tournament.
Ottawa Senators forward Brady Tkachuk, who was representing the U.S. alongside his brother, explained that they had a group chat with New York Rangers forward J.T. Miller to coordinate the three fights in Saturday's game, essentially trying to add an element of chaos. Brady fought Panthers forward Sam Bennett, while Miller fought St. Louis Blues defenseman Colton Parayko.
In response, Hagel said, "We don't need to initiate anything. We don't need any group chats going on," after Canada and the U.S. secured a rematch in the championship game. Matthew then chirped back by saying, "Maybe their team doesn't like each other," setting up for a thrilling final.
Indeed it was, and this time, Hagel and Canada got the last laugh.
Hagel, 26, has continuously improved since joining the Lightning at the 2022 trade deadline. The Saskatchewan native is on track for his best NHL season, sitting at 26 goals and 62 points at the 4 Nations break. He's not just a scorer, though, as he plays well defensively and has a good deal of grit to his game.
Hagel and Matthew will likely be at each other's throats as long as they're both playing in the Sunshine State, but the former has the bragging rights after this outstanding tournament.

More news continues to come out regarding John Tortorella’s last few weeks as the head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers. In an article from Kevin Kurz of The Athletic, the Philadelphia-based reporter succinctly described Tortorella’s growing feud between Flyers management and defenseman Cam York. For context, York was benched for much of Tortorella’s last game as Philadelphia’s head coach and for the entirety of the Flyers’ game Thursday against the Montreal Canadiens, which interim head coach Brad Shaw described as a “disciplinary issue.” As mentioned in Kurz’s article, and later confirmed by Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff, there was a "heated verbal exchange" between Tortorella and York that led to the former’s ouster as head coach and the latter’s lack of ice time Thursday night. Kurz noted the growing tension between York and Tortorella dating back to the trade deadline, when after being a healthy scratch, York said, “I mean, I’m not playing to prove him anything. I’m playing for the guys in this locker room and the logo on my chest. I’m not playing for him, necessarily, if that makes sense.” Questioned about the incident after Thursday night’s contest, Kurz quoted York with a generically pacified response. “I’m not going to get into the details of it. I will say this, I take full responsibility for my actions. It’s been addressed here in the locker room. It’s something that I’m going to put behind me and move on from. We’ve got eight games left here and that’s my focus right now. We’ll leave it at that.” Frustration had been mounting around Tortorella at all levels of the Flyers organization, leading to his ouster shortly before the regular season’s conclusion. Other notes from the Eastern Conference: According to a team announcement, Andrei Svechnikov will return to the Carolina Hurricanes’ lineup tonight against the Montreal Canadiens. The former second overall pick of the 2018 NHL Draft had missed Carolina’s previous seven games with an upper-body injury. Despite being the fourth-highest scorer on the team, the Hurricanes have fared well without Svechnikov, managing a 5-2-0 record in his absence. Moving to the Atlantic Division, the Boston Bruins welcomed back defenseman Nikita Zadorov, who had missed the team’s last game due to a personal leave. Hopefully, for the Bruins’ sake, Zadorov’s return to the lineup against the Detroit Red Wings Saturday night will give Boston a much-needed jolt. The team has performed dreadfully since the trade deadline in early March, managing a 2-7-1 record in its last 10 games while being outscored by a 19-goal margin.
Tyreek Hill has ignited a fresh wave of speculation about his future with some social media activity, and potential trade suitors have likely taken note. Hill had a series of cryptic posts on X Sunday that led many to believe he could seek a trade. The first hint came when a user posed a question asking if Miami Dolphins fans would be open to trading the star wide receiver. Hill responded with a smiley face emoji. Hill then found another post where a salary cap expert suggested Hill is a candidate to be traded during the NFL Draft. Hill reposted the prediction with a peace sign emoji. Hill had to have known how those responses would be interpreted. Remember, this is the same player who indicated he would leave the Dolphins after their season ended. While the two sides were said to have smoothed things over, no one would be shocked if Hill were to ask for a trade in the coming weeks. If Hill does want out of Miami, which teams might have interest in acquiring him? Here are five potential landing spots for the eight-time Pro Bowl selection: Los Angeles Chargers Ladd McConkey had an outstanding rookie season last year with 82 catches, 1,149 yards and seven touchdowns. The former Georgia star looks like a true No. 1 receiver, but the Chargers are not nearly as deep at the wide receiver position as they were in years past. L.A. reacquired Mike Williams in a trade with the New York Jets midway through last season, but the veteran had three or fewer catches in every game. Justin Herbert is one of the most talented quarterbacks in the NFL, and Hill's speed could add an element to the Chargers' offense that would be incredibly difficult to stop. Dallas Cowboys How long can Jerry Jones go without making a huge splash? The Cowboys need to sign Micah Parsons to an extension, but they could find a way to do that and add Hill. What better way to welcome new head coach Brian Schottenheimer than by gifting him with a wide receiver duo of Hill and CeeDee Lamb? Dak Prescott will turn 32 this summer. The quarterback has been banged up in recent years, and his prime will not last forever. You know Jones' eyes are going to light up if Hill wants a change of scenery. New England Patriots The Patriots just signed Stefon Diggs to a four-year, $69M deal, but the contract is a lot more team-friendly than it sounds. New England also still has nearly $70M in salary cap space, according to Spotrac. It can easily afford to take on Hill's $30M salary. If the Patriots want Drake Maye to make a second-year leap, they need to surround him with weapons. A duo of Diggs and Hill would turn New England's wide receiver room from one of the worst in the league to one of the best in a single offseason. Baltimore Ravens The Ravens signed DeAndre Hopkins this offseason, but he is the latest in a long line of past-their-prime wideouts who have landed in Baltimore. At 31, Hill is still playing his best football. Hill and Zay Flowers could do some serious damage in the same offense. The Ravens will always be run-first as long as Derrick Henry is healthy, but Hill is the type of player who could push them over the top. Kansas City Chiefs Hill has been open about the fact that he never wanted to leave Kansas City. He simply wanted a new contract, and the two sides could not reach an agreement. Hill has even left the door open for a return to the Chiefs. The Chiefs have solid receivers in Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice, but the latter is working his way back from a major knee injury. Travis Kelce's best days are also behind him. If Kansas City wants to keep its Super Bowl appearance streak alive, adding Hill would be one way to instantly boost its chances.
The opening weekend of the 2025 MLB season is officially in the books. In the grand scheme of things, there are still 159 games left to play (158 for a select few). However, there's plenty of overreaction fodder in the aftermath of baseball's inaugural weekend, so let's break it down. The New York Yankees have MLB's best lineup and will slug their way back to the World Series There's no denying what the Yankees did to the Milwaukee Brewers this past weekend: 36 total runs scored, 15 home runs (including four just from Aaron Judge alone) against just 14 Milwaukee runs. A complete bludgeoning of a National League playoff team from a season ago. Overall, the Bronx Bombers lived up to the hype in their first series since Juan Soto's departure to Queens. But can they keep up this torrid hitting pace? Or will the magic of their new 'torpedo' bats fade over time? The Los Angeles Dodgers will easily defend their 2024 title Los Angeles became the first team to reach five wins on the early season after two consecutive sweeps of the Chicago Cubs in Japan and the Detroit Tigers at Dodger Stadium. The Dodgers should absolutely be considered the favorites once again in 2025 given their immense talent, but repeating is nevertheless a difficult feat: the last team to do so was the 2000 New York Yankees, who finished off a three-peat. The St. Louis Cardinals might be the best team in the NL Central It's three games into the season, but the Cardinals do in fact sit atop the NL Central division following their three-game dominance of the Minnesota Twins at Busch Stadium, their best start since 2006. That year, the Redbirds won it all. Another thing to note about that 2006 season: The Cardinals clinched the NL Central with just 83 victories. That may not be entirely out of the question in 2025 given how awful the rest of their rivals looked on opening weekend, but we'll still need to see more before getting serious about St. Louis. Boston Red Sox DH Rafael Devers will have his worst professional season to date Devers has endured a brutal beginning to his 2025 season, with 12 strikeouts in 16 at-bats, while going hitless over his first four games. Perhaps the transition to DH, which he initially opposed, is feeding on the All-Star's bruised ego. Nevertheless, this has been an unusual cold spell for the otherwise prolific hitter, who slugged 28 home runs with an .871 OPS in 2024. But history says to trust the 28-year-old third baseman, whose career .853 OPS suggests a bounce back at some point or another. In other words? He's simply too talented to stay this bad. The Atlanta Braves may not be able to dig out of their winless hole Being swept by the San Diego Padres isn't anything to be ashamed about, but it's still surprising how uncompetitive the Atlanta Braves looked out of the gate in 2025. Sure, Atlanta may not be fully healthy yet (Starter Spencer Strider and outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. are expected back around late April or early May), but this is still a stacked roster with high expectations. There really aren't many excuses for a slow start, but the Braves have more than earned the benefit of the doubt considering their surprise playoff run off an injury-riddled 2024 campaign. Honorable mention: The San Diego Padres are a legitimate contender They shut out the vaunted Braves lineup in two consecutive games en route to a four-game sweep. Talk about an early statement from a team whose only major offseason move was signing right-hander Nick Pivetta, who was excellent over seven scoreless innings in his season debut on Sunday night. If the Padres continue to punch above their weight, the National League playoff field may have gotten that much wider.
The 2024 season did not have the offensive line we have all grown to ex[etc year in and year out from the Oklahoma Sooners. This is a university that you could call O-Line-U, or Offensive Lineman University, because they put guys in the league. And, they do it at a very high rate. The Sooners have had some very elite offensive lines over the last handful of years, and if you look at some of the best in the league in the trenches on the offensive side of the ball, you'll find a few who used to wear Crimson and Cream. Last year was a failure in that department. The offense was bad as a whole, and the offensive line dealt with injuries. But, the guys who did play just weren't good enough. In the SEC, that just cannot happen. The Sooners recruited five-star tackle Michael Fasusi, who is already on campus, turning heads. But they won't stop there. They're trying to get as many dudes as they can. One of them revealed one thing he loved about offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh, which may just be the deciding factor in getting him to Norman. Sooners recruiting OT Deacon Schmitt Deacon Schmitt is a four-star offensive tackle from Windsor, Colorado, and one of the top football prospects in the Class of 2026. At 6’5” and 320 pounds, he’s a big, strong, and athletic player for Windsor High School. As a sophomore, he earned first-team all-conference honors, and he’s continued to excel in his junior year. He’s received over 25 offers from major college football programs like Alabama, USC, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Georgia, Tennessee, Nebraska, and Colorado. He’s narrowed his choices to a top eight and is ranked as Colorado’s No. 1 recruit and a top offensive tackle nationally. While he plays tackle now, some see him as a future interior lineman. He’s visited schools like Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Colorado in 2025 and has official visits planned for the summer. During his visit to Oklahoma, he revealed why Bedenbaugh was a coach that he admired. "He'll get on your ass. And that's the kind of coach I need." The Sooners could use a guy like him committing.
