Rankings

Logan Hensler has made massive improvements in his game since the beginning of his freshman year at the University of Wisconsin. It took a while for him to adjust to the increased speed at the NCAA level, but as Elite Prospects’ scout Daniel Gee noted, he is showing more confidence in his skills now and has increased his draft stock since his average performance at the 2025 World Juniors.

“I am blown away by how much Hensler has improved over this season. This is a more confident player that has adjusted to the pace of the NCAA game — to the point where he is leveraging his tools at a high level to put forth effective shift-after-shift. First, Hensler’s retrieval game has evolved — proactive contact habits, quick decisions off the pickup; you even get some deft between the legs work. His skating is so high-end — at least a 6.5-7 grade. The four-way mobility will pay constant dividends in his career…”

While Hensler only has two goals and 12 points in 32 games this season, he has shown flashes of offensive skill among his solid defensive habits. His biggest strengths lie in his skating and mobility, two things that are key to success in today’s NHL. He also has a great stick defensively, regularly breaking up plays with deft interceptions and tips, both off the rush and in his own zone.

Hensler’s shot has been described as a strength, too, but goalies rarely have to stop it, as it often gets blocked or tipped out of play due to his inability to find shooting lanes. If he can find a way to use his mobility and awareness to walk the blue line a bit more and change the angle of his shot, he might get more shots through and increase his goal total as a result.

Hensler relies a lot on his stick to defend, which can be a problem at times when players are elite puck handlers. He could be more physical in those situations, and while he doesn’t shy away from physicality, scouts have noted a lack of consistency in that area. As mentioned off the top, he does show flashes of offensive potential, but most of the time, he opts to go for the safe play rather than taking risks. While this is usually a good thing for a defenseman, with his elite skating and mobility, he could become more of a two-way threat if he uses his already-solid awareness and hockey sense to create more chances offensively.

Other THW Draft Profiles

Logan Hensler – NHL Draft Projection

All in all, Hensler has all the tools scouts are looking for in a mobile two-way defenseman. With his size, handedness and elite mobility and awareness, he will be sought-after in the 2025 Draft. Rankings have him all over the place, from seventh (Dobber Prospects) to 26th (Craig Button), so it’s hard to say where he will ultimately go when draft day comes. I anticipate he won’t fall below the top 20, considering how coveted big right-hand shot defensemen who can skate are in today’s NHL.

Quotables

“Hensler’s greatest strength is his rush defense, which is easily among the best in the class. He’s proactive in breaking up plays in both the neutral zone and when pinching. Hensler has a very timely defensive stick and closes gaps in a smooth, controlled fashion.” – Luke Sweeney, Dobber Prospects

“Hensler is plenty mobile for his size. He’s a two-way defenceman with some underlying offence. Hensler is capable of walking the offensive blue line to open up shooting and passing lanes. He’s also a big body who can play both sides of the ice. Defenders like Hensler, once they fully develop, are worth their weight in gold at the NHL level.” – Jason Bukala, Sportsnet

“Two of his biggest strengths are his smooth skating and his awareness on the ice. We’ve noted his poise and composure as a strength in the past, which was why his World Juniors play frustrated us so much. He’s got a relentless motor, and he’s always looking to disrupt opponents’ play.” – Hannah Stuart, Bleacher Report

“Few defenders in this class can get the puck up the ice as well as Logan Hensler. He’s smart away from the puck and strong on it, making good plays to close the gap with opponents and force turnovers – then using a great jump, quick stickhandling, and a high top speed to burst up the ice quick. But he’s not the north-south driver that you’d expect with that backing. Hensler is deliberate with his rushes, and knows how to gain the blue then cut into space in the middle, or dip low to create extra time. That patience makes him a great playmaker, but he has the drive to the net and in-tight finishing to expose opponents that over-respect the pass.” – Gabriel Foley, Recruit Scouting

NHL Potential

Without a doubt, Hensler’s skating, defensive awareness, and active stick will be the reason he makes it to the NHL. He has high-end skills in those areas and might even become a defender who runs his own pairing one day. He won’t be a lethal point producer like Quinn Hughes or Cale Makar, but he might find a sweet spot as a Charlie McAvoy-type defender who hits the 50-point threshold in his prime and is relied upon in all situations.

Risk-Reward Analysis

Risk – 4/5, Reward – 4/5

Fantasy Hockey Potential

Offence – 7/10, Defence – 8/10

Awards/Achievements

Hensler was part of Team USA’s gold medal-winning team at the 2025 World Juniors. He also won a silver medal at the 2024 U18 World Hockey Championship.
