The Edmonton Oilers were active at the 2025 Trade Deadline acquiring Jake Walman from the San Jose Sharks to bolster their defensive depth, as well as making a move with the Boston Bruins to bring in Trent Frederic and Max Jones to bolster their forward depth. Plenty of fans were hoping the Oilers would take a swing for a goaltender and improve their depth between the pipes, but they refused to do so, running into the postseason with a tandem of Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard. However, now it seems like the team is prepared to improve their goaltending situation this offseason when free agency comes around.
In a recent segment of Oilers Now, Bob Stauffer claimed he was sure that the team is looking to make a splash. Stauffer confidently stated “I know for a fact they’re gonna do that,” when discussing with Frank Seravalli if the Oilers would look to address their goaltending inconsistencies. Stauffer added, “I do expect Edmonton to engage in signing an organizational number three goalie that’s played in the National Hockey League in the last couple of years.” If Stauffer’s report is accurate, it seems as though the Oilers will continue with Skinner as their starter and create some competition for the backup spot on the Oilers, giving Pickard a bit of a challenge.
When taking a look at who could be available in free agency at an affordable price, the selections aren’t great. There are quite a few unrestricted free-agent goaltenders that the Oilers could consider like Vitek Vanecek, Alex Georgiev, and Ville Husso, but none of them are guaranteed upgrades on Pickard. One name that does stand out is 34-year-old Jake Allen, who currently plays for the New Jersey Devils backing up Jacob Markstrom and has had an incredibly strong season posting a 2.56 goals-against-average (GAA) and a .913 save percentage (SV%) through 27 games winning 12 of them and posting four shutouts.
His age and price could both be a concern for the Oilers, but he is an upgrade on Pickard and has proven throughout his career he can be trusted to help his team win. Through 456 career games, he has posted a 2.75 GAA and a .908 SV% winning 207 of them and posting 28 shutouts. He is in the final season of a two-year contract that has a $3.85 million cap hit, and it’s safe to assume he could get a slight pay raise on his next deal no matter where he ends up signing.
The Oilers could look at offer sheeting a restricted free-agent goaltender, but none of those options are enticing either. Another decent option could be 37-year-old James Reimer, who has played 15 games this season and only won three with the Buffalo Sabres, posting a 3.00 GAA and a .897 SV%. It has been a bit of a down season for him, but he has had a solid career posting a 2.88 GAA and a .910 SV% through 516 games winning 218 of them and adding 30 shutouts. He would be a risky signing, but creating some internal competition between him and Pickard could be beneficial for the Oilers’ goaltending depth.
Either way, the Oilers bringing in another goaltender would be a huge help for them heading into the 2025-26 season. The inconsistency from their current tandem has led to fans worrying about their chances in the playoffs this season, and it has forced them to take a look at making an addition when the season is over, so hopefully, they can make a good signing and give fans confidence that they can make a run for a Stanley Cup next season, regardless of what happens this season.
