Oilers’ Leon Draisaitl wins 2024-25 Rocket Richard Trophy

Edmonton Oilers superstar Leon Draisaitl has won the Rocket Richard trophy as the NHL’s top goal-scorer in 2024-25, scoring 52 to be the only 50-goal scorer this season.

Draisaitl had an outstanding season with the Oilers in 2024-25 in a year where no single player dominated the league. In 71 regular-season games, Draisaitl scored 52 goals and 54 assists for 106 points.

It’s Draisaitl’s second consecutive 106-point season and the fourth 100-plus point season of the German’s career. Draisaitl has six seasons with over 100 points to his credit, with his best being the 128-point campaign he had in 2022-23. That same season, Draisaitl led the playoffs with 13 goals despite the Oilers not making the final. Draisaitl is a candidate to win the Hart Trophy as the NHL’s most valuable player. He previously did it in 2019-20 when he led the league with 67 assists and 110 points.

Draisaitl was the only player to score 50 goals this season. The last time just one player had 50 in a campaign was when Alex Ovechkin – the NHL’s all-time goals leader – sat alone for three straight years (2013-14 to 2015-16). Last year had four hits, with five doing so the previous year.

Toronto Maple Leafs forward William Nylander had the second-most goals with 45, while Buffalo’s Tage Thompson had 44. David Pastrnak (43), Alex Ovechkin (43), Brayden Point (42), Kyle Connor (41) and Jake Guentzel (41) were the others to break past the 40-goal mark this season.

Draisaitl was one of six players to hit the century point mark this year, tying Pastrnak for third. Nikita Kucherov won the NHL’s scoring title with 121 points this season.

Draisaitl’s offensive impact was crucial to the Oilers’ success, as they finished with a record of 48-29-5. That was enough to secure third place in the Pacific Division and earn their sixth consecutive playoff appearance. The Oilers are set to start the playoffs on Monday, April 21 against the Los Angeles Kings.
