Oilers News & Rumours: Binnington, Savoie, Gibson
Jordan Binnington, St. Louis Blues (Jess Starr/The Hockey Writers)

The Edmonton Oilers have been front and center for many fans around the NHL as everyone is waiting to see what they will do at the 2025 Trade Deadline. Social media has been running rampant with mock trades as fans have been divided on what the team needs to have another deep playoff run, but there have also been plenty of reports from trusted analysts and insiders who have shed some more light on what could happen.

In this new edition of Oilers News & Rumours, we take a look at the potential interest of Jordan Binnington and John Gibson, as well as the emergence of prospect Matthew Savoie who has played his first few games with the team.

Analyst Suggests Oilers Interested in Jordan Binnington

Nick Kypreos, an analyst and trusted pundit with Sportsnet, suggests the Oilers are among several teams with interest in acquiring St. Louis Blues’ goaltender Jordan Binnington. He also suggested the Detroit Red Wings and Carolina Hurricanes as teams who could also have some interest in bringing him in for a playoff run, if the Blues are open to moving him before the March 7th deadline. Binnington has a $6 million cap hit with term left on his contract, so the Blues could be looking at a massive return in any trade for him, especially considering he helped lead them to a Stanley Cup in 2019.

Binnington, who is 31 years old, has posted a 2.82 goals-against-average (GAA) and a .899 save percentage (SV%) through 41 games having won 17 of them and posting three shutouts. Throughout his career, he has posted a 2.80 GAA and a .907 SV% through 321 games having won 162 of them and posting 18 shutouts, winning a Stanley Cup in 2019 with the Blues. Oilers General Manager, Stan Bowman, has mentioned several times he trusts their current goaltending tandem, but we will see what he decides to do before the deadline.

Matthew Savoie Makes Oilers Debut

The Oilers recalled forward Matthew Savoie from the American Hockey League (AHL) after a strong showing with the Bakersfield Condors up until this point in the campaign, and have put him in their lineup to give him some experience at the NHL level. In his first three games with the Oilers, he notched one assist and has earned praise from fans for his strong play at both ends of the ice, with some calling him the best player as the team struggles with a losing streak. Surprisingly, Savoie was a healthy scratch against the Florida Panthers on Thursday (Feb. 27) and the Oilers lost 4-3, extending their losing streak to five games.

Oilers & John Gibson Connection Unlikely

The Oilers had been connected to John Gibson previously as the rumours swirled that they may consider bringing in a goaltender, however, that no longer seems to be the case. Several analysts and insiders have shut down any possibility that the Oilers are going to acquire him, on top of Bowman mentioning in a recent interview that he doesn’t believe there is anyone available on the trade market that’s a guaranteed upgrade on their current tandem, also flat out saying he doesn’t think they need to add a goaltender.

The Oilers are on a 5-game losing streak nearing the 2025 Trade Deadline, so their next week is going to be interesting. They will have to change something up to start finding a way to win games, and with the likelihood that Evander Kane returns before the postseason, they may have less money to spend than originally expected.
