General manager Patrik Allvin has revealed if the team will be able to keep Thatcher Demko beyond next season after recently signing Kevin Lankinen to a contract extension.
To say that the last 12 months have been rough for Thatcher Demko is an understatement, and after suffering an injury last month, he was placed on injured reserve, with an unclear timeline on when he may return.
Last Friday, Thatcher Demko returned to practice with the club and it was a welcome sight as they continue their push for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
In a recent interview with Pierre LeBrun of TSN and The Athletic, Patrik Allvin was asked about Thatcher Demko's future with the Vancouver Canucks, especially after they signed Kevin Lankinen to a five-year deal last month.
Allvin told Pierre LeBrun that the organization believes they'll have some room salary cap-wise in order to keep Thatcher Demko around to form a tandem with Kevin Lankinen.
"I do think there's room. Again, I have a lot of respect for Thatcher, and he's got another year on his contract. And I believe if you look around the league and see what teams are allocating to goalies, I still think there's a good chance for us to keep both of them," Allvin said according to LeBrun.
Thatcher Demko will be eligible to sign a contract extension with the Vancouver Canucks as early as July 1, but it seems pretty unlikely something will get done this summer for a number of reasons.
The biggest reason is that, understandably, Thatcher Demko wants to return to 100% health and bounce back next season in order to maximize the dollar figure he could get either from Vancouver or another team as a free agent in 2026.
Last season, Demko was a finalist for the Vezina Trophy after putting up a 2.45 goals against average, a .918 save percentage and five shutouts in 51 games for the Canucks.
When healthy we all know how good Thatcher Demko can be, so it wouldn't make a whole lot of sense on his part to sign an extension this summer at a low number rather than waiting 12 months, hopefully having a strong 2025-26 campaign and cashing in.
