Red-hot Blues are NHL's biggest Stanley Cup sleeper

Don't look now, but the surging St. Louis Blues may be the NHL's best team.

After a thrilling overtime victory on Tuesday over the Red Wings, the Blues have won 10 consecutive games.

"It's been fun ride," Cam Fowler said. "We all enjoy playing with each other and there's not many opportunities that you have in this league to keep a streak like this going. Everybody made big-time plays that helped us win. So, it's fun to be able to keep this thing rolling."

Following their latest win, the Blues now claim the top wild-card spot in the Western Conference with less than two weeks remaining in the regular season.

Despite their sudden standing atop the Western Conference wild-card picture, the Blues are keeping their attention on the regular season, for now.

"We're just taking it one game at a time," Blues center Jordan Kyrou said. "We come in each day and work hard. We're just trying to keep our identity going and build from here."

Midway through the season, the Blues were 19-18-4 and sellers at the trade deadline. The playoffs seemed like a longshot and visions of securing the Stanley Cup were even more far-fetched.

Since then, the Blues have been red-hot, dropping just two games since the NHL All-Star break. Additionally, their 10-game win streak is the franchise's longest since a club-record 11-game streak in 2018-19 -- the same season the Blues won the first Stanley Cup in franchise history.

Since the midseason break, St. Louis leads the league in goals, assists and wins. Over that span, the Blues have also allowed the third-fewest goals, highlighting their dominance on both ends.

While the Blues aren't high on star power, the gritty team has consistently found ways to win.

"I think [the depth] we have is the strength of our team," said Fowler. "The depth we have, upfront and on the backend, we feel like every night there could be different guys contributing and helping us win hockey games."

Following their tenth consecutive win, the surging Blues have quietly become a dark horse contender for the Stanley Cup.

St. Louis will face a tough first-round matchup as a wild-card team but as we've seen in recent history, anything can happen when teams catch fire.

The Blues struggled mightily back in the 2018-19 season, sitting with a league-worst 15-18-4 record through 37 games. They finished the season off by going on a similar hot streak and riding it to a playoff berth.

St. Louis went on to meet the Winnipeg Jets in the first round. The Jets were coming off a Conference Final appearance the year prior, making the Blues a sizeable underdog going in. The Blues managed to win the series in six games and continued the hot streak all the way until they captured the franchise's first Stanley Cup.

Oddly enough, the Blues are projected to face Winnipeg in a first-round matchup again this season.

Should history repeat itself, St. Louis could be on the cusp of yet another improbable championship run.
