Red Wings Trade Husso to Ducks

The Ville Husso era with the Detroit Red Wings began with such promise. Monday, it came to an end in unspectacular fashion.

The Red Wings have traded the veteran Finnish netminder to the Anaheim Ducks. In return, Detroit is receiving the proverbial future considerations. That will likely mean the Wings wind up eating a portion of Husso’s $4.75 million salary for the remainder of the season.

Acquired from the St. Louis Blues at the 2022 NHL entry draft, Husso was immediately agreeing to terms on a three-year $14.25-million pact with Detroit.

Early on, it was appearing to be a wise investment. Husso posted a shutout in his Red Wings debut. Through his first 14 appearances in the Detroit net, he was 9-2-3 with three shutouts.

Then, much like Humpty Dumpty, Husso took a great fall. And he could never get back up.

Injury-Plagued 2023-24 Season For Red Wings Husso

He lost eight of his last nine decisions in 2022-23. Last season, Husso allowed three or more goals in 14 of his 19 appearances. He was hurt in a Dec. 18 game – oddly enough, against the Ducks – and wouldn’t play again until a Feb. 13 date at Edmonton. Husso didn’t make it to the nine-minute mark before leaving again through injury.

Later, on a rehab stint with the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins, Husso was again injured during the pre-game warmup. Following that exit, he was shut down for the season.

It looked like he was on the rebound, though. Husso won the opening-night start against Pittsburgh. However, the Penguins chased him from the net with four goals on 14 shots.

By mid-October, the Red Wings were placing Husso on waivers and assigning him to the Griffins. In nine games for Detroit this season, Husso was 1-5-2 with a 3.69 goals-against average and .866 save percentage.

Ducks In Need Of A Goalie

Though Anaheim goalie John Gibson is currently out with an upper-body injury, the Ducks were indicating that Husso would be given assignment to their AHL farm club in San Diego.

Calle Clang is out injured, leaving  Oscar Dansk as the only experienced goalie on the Anaheim depth chart. Dansk dressed as backup to Lukas Dostal in Sunday’s 5-4 Ducks overtime loss at Detroit.

The move also clears up a goalie log jam in Grand Rapids. There were three goalies on the Griffins’ roster. Husso’s depature leaves the net to Sebastian Cossa and NHL veteran Jack Campbell.

According to PuckPedia.com, the Red Wings now have over $10.8 million in salary cap space, which would be the equivalent of $13.6 million at the deadline.
