After a 7-2 blowout loss at the hands of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Philadelphia Flyers head coach John Tortorella had a very honest response, putting a lot of the blame on himself as a head coach. But with Tortorella admitting that he’s not able to coach the Flyers at this point, what does that say about his future with the team?
Frank Seravalli talked about Tortorella’s response to the loss, and what it could mean for his future, on Daily Faceoff Live.
Frank Seravalli: I don’t know where to come out on this, because on one hand, [the Flyers] just got rocked in Toronto, and it’s not necessarily their fault. This is a depleted roster that is not very good. So [Tortorella] takes and deflects a lot of the attention knowing that he’s in Toronto with a throng of microphones and cameras in front of him, with people hanging on his every word, and so if he puts it on himself, then it’s less heat on his players.
But on the other hand, I feel like John Tortorella is saying the quiet part out loud and telling on himself, the part that I’ve believed, the part that many others watching have believed is that: is he fully invested? This is a guy that has coached winning teams, has been in the mix, has won a Stanley Cup, and has, for the last three years, coached a team with no expectations, and coached them, quite frankly, better than many would or could.
He squeezed every last drop out of what he has in front of him, and yet, they’re so far away that it’s really difficult to see the horizon. And I don’t know where they go from here, but if there is any shred of truth in what John Tortorella said, which I believe there’s more than a shred, then [the Flyers] have to do something about it and they have to bring in someone else. He has one season left on his deal at $4 million. Make a coaching change, because even to the guys that are in that room, as depleted as the roster is, it’s not fair to them.
