Veteran defensive tackle Cameron Heyward has been absent from the Steelers' voluntary offseason workouts and OTAs and does not plan to show up as he seeks a contract extension, per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.
Last week, linebacker Alex Highsmith said practice has been "quieter" without Heyward, but on Tuesday, second-year defensive tackle Keeanu Benton revealed the team captain is still finding ways to help the team during his holdout.
"We talk to him. He asks questions about what's going on here and how he can help, even though he's not here," Benton said. "So he still helps, mentally especially. He's a guy that's not in here right now but he's still heard as a captain."
Benton having a veteran like Heyward in his corner is important, especially heading into his second year in the league. He has been tabbed as a breakout candidate, and rightfully so, following a productive rookie season.
In 2023, the former second-round pick registered 36 tackles, one sack and two forced fumbles. He knows his coaches and all the fans are expecting him to take his game to another level this season.
"They're also saying it, but I expect it of myself as well," Benton added. "You can't stay the same and expect to succeed in this league. That's a point that's been stressed."
Heyward will likely return to the lineup at some point, but there's no arguing Benton's role is going to grow this season with or without him.
Benton knows that and has been focusing on the basics to make sure the stat sheet looks better this time next year.
"I feel like I missed a couple of sacks last year," Benton finished. "Only ended up with one, so just finishing up those pass rush plays."
For now, Benton will take advantage of all the extra reps he's been getting while Heyward handles his off-the-field business.
