Chargers RB J.K. Dobbins proving himself all over again this season

Los Angeles Chargers running back J.K. Dobbins is using the start of the 2024 season as a way to re-introduce himself to NFL fans everywhere. And after enduring back-to-back injury plagued seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, Dobbins is proving himself all over again.

On Sunday, Dobbins ran for 131 yards on 17 carries to lead the Chargers to a 26-3 win over the Carolina Panthers. This came after he opened the season averaging a staggering 13.5 yards per carry against the rival Las Vegas Raiders. Dobbins ran for 130 yards on only 10 rushing attempts in Week 1.

Now through two games, Dobbins has reached 130 yards and scored a touchdown every week. And while this type of production may not last, the former 2020 second round pick by the Ravens is letting the world know he’s still capable of being a top back when healthy.

But Dobbins isn’t satisfied. He even said as much in an interview with a CBS reporter Amanda Balionis on the field after the game.

“Nah, on to the next week.”

The key is that he stays healthy and that’s why Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh is monitoring Dobbins’ touches and making sure to not overload the 25-year-old.

Prior to 2024, Dobbins’ career has been marred with injuries. He suffered a torn ACL in the final preseason game in 2021 and missed that entire season. Then, a year later, Dobbins’ bad luck crept up again as he played in only eight games and spent time on injured reserve with a knee injury.

And in devastating fashion, Dobbins tore his Achilles tendon in Week 1 last fall. He would lose another full season. That moment would be his last as a member of the Ravens. It would also be why Dobbins would have to settle for just a one-year $1.61 million deal with the Chargers this off-season.

The probability of Dobbins experiencing a serious injury again might be concerning, but the fact remains he’s a force to be reckoned with when he is on the field. Dobbins has totaled 1,482 yards on an average of 6.1 yards per rush with 13 touchdowns in just 25 games played for his career.

Los Angeles is now the benefactor of a player who could become one of best bargains in the NFL.
